Summary:
At the Lodge of the Golden Windhorse, a commune, co-owner William Carter is found at the bottom of a staircase with a broken neck. Barnaby suspects it was an accident, but another 'accident' with a falling canonball and a whispered conversation change his mind. Then Ian Craigie, the other owner of the Lodge, is stabbed during a spiritual meeting, but none but a boy who was devoted to Craigie had gone anywhere near him... in his last moments, Craigie pointed to someone - but Troy and Barnaby still have to find out if it was Guy Gamelin, who had just lost £3,000,000 to Craigie, who had murdered him. Meanwhile, the people at the lodge all have secrets they're desperately trying to hide from the police - but would any of them kill to keep it secret?

Solution

The murderer of William Carter is Tim Riley. Craigie and Carter had been arguing on the top of the stairs, when Carter started showing physically threatening behaviour towards Craigie. Subsequently, Tim (wanting to protect his master) gave Carter a push after which the man fell down the stairs and broke his neck. Arno Gibbs poured some whiskey down the dead man's throat to make it seem as if he'd been drinking and fell.

The murderer of Ian Craigie is Christopher Wrainwright. Christopher had hooked up with Sylvie Gamelin, heir of the Gamelin-fortune (although he didn't know this when they first met). Later, after he found out, Sylvie gave all £3,000,000 to Ian Craigie to use for the Lodge of the Golden Windhorse. Christopher wasn't that easily ready to share 'his' part of the money (intending to marry Sylvie), and decided to kill Craigie.

During May Cuttle's regression to Roman times, he (being an experienced knife-thrower) killed Craigie with a knife he'd taken from the dinner table.
