-After having my GameCube for over a year and it working perfectly, something went wrong.  The first time I saw the error message was while playing Metroid Prime.  I heard it was normal in some Metroid reviews, so I didn't think much about it.  Now all my games have started displaying the message.
I'm not sure whether it was overheating or the lens needed replaced.  I cleaned the lens with everything possible.  My dad even used a vacuum to try to suck out possible dust through the vents.  All attempts were futile.  I've decided to buy a new one, since of all the good deals going around.  My dad is going to keep my old one and send it to a repair shop.  Then he gets to play Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 in his room.
I hope this problem doesn't exist in a lot of GameCubes.  They might overheat a little easier since of their size, or have dirty lenses.  The specific error message said "The disc cannot be read".  Nintendo's customer service on their site is good.  You can bring up a map of the closest repair centers or have Nintendo pick up your GameCube at your house.  It costs about $75 for repair centers and about $80 for Nintendo to pick it up at your house and fix it.
All in all, be sure to clean your GameCube a lot and keep it out of dust zones.  I had kept mine in a cabinet, which had a lot of dust inside it and hardly any space inside.
