DECEMBER 21, 2008

Congrats to all of our students for doing a great job at our Winter Concert!  Thank you to all of our parents who helped put everything together from the gift baskets, ticket sales, refreshments, and all the fundraising that has been done.

DECEMBER 14, 2008

We have been extremely busy for the last week or so and everything has happened without a hitch!  We had a recruiting field trip to Mauger, that went very well, we played for the senior citizens, and the tree lighting in town (click here for pics).  Next and final step in this chapter is our Winter Concert, to be held this Thursday, Dec. 18th, 8PM at MHS.   Please come and see what we have been up to since September!

Sadly, our fundraisers have been going at a slower success rate.  So far, all but one of our fundraisers have dipped below our totals from last year.  Please get involved with these potentially high yielding activities.  It's pretty much free money towards your accounts if you just put a little effort into it.  Our current fundraiser is the pizza sale.  As an added incentive to sell, sell, sell...every student who sells at least TEN kits will have their names put into a drawing for one student to win $50 towards their personal account.  Let's beat last year's record shall we?

Our next fundraiser will be the Superbowl Sub sale so keep an eye out for that.

Information has been emailed home about "Drumline Live!" so please make sure you start planning for that as well.  We have hard copies of the permission slips at school if you were unable to download it.

Listening Room 3.2 is coming up on January 14th.   Our guest, Justina, has confirmed that she will be performing and after the high quality performances we had in November, I am  looking forward to seeing what the students bring to the stage next.

Our Myrtle Beach trip has been approved by the board!!  Starting on Thursday (23rd), we will be sending all the information home with our students.  Please read through our policies carefully and return all needed paperwork and first deposit by November 5th.

We are still in need of an RN to accompany us on our trip so if you are a nurse or know someone who is, please forward our information to them.

Here is a preliminary deposit schedule:

Deposit 1 ($200 due 11/5) will reserve a spot on the trip.

Deposit 2 ($220 due 1/16) will let you sign up for a room.

Deposit 3 ($220 due 3/12) will let you sign up for a bus.

Again, please get involved with our fundraisers!  The fruit sale is newly activated.

LISTENING ROOM 3.1 is set for Wed., Nov 12th from 7-9PM with guest, Karen Updike (aka Faren).  In addition to being a talented musician, Karen is also a gifted artist.  She will have her CD's and artwork available for sale at our show.  Please check out www.karenupdike.com.

Students who want to play, please start finalizing your songs and set list.  Three weeks will go by very fast.  In addition to the show that week, the Fall Drama is also scheduled so if you're in both, there is more urgency to prepare.  Once you have your set list figured out, come see me so I can program you.

Thank you for your cooperation with bringing back signed permissions slips!  We are still missing a few but overall, the response was great.

If you are not in Pep Band, please join!  This group is the best way to get your playing in shape because of the extra practice and performing time you have.  It is also worth SIX honor band points, the most you can get in one group, and will count towards your GPA and class rank.  Visit the calendar link for remaining practices and games.

Our first official fundraiser is upon us and it is Sally Foster.  Information packets are available in room 101 or 99.  Our candy sales will begin on Monday the 15th as well.  Candy sales have a 50% profit so for every box of 20 you buy and sell, you get $10 in your personal student account.  How it works: Students start with buying at least 20 candy bars for $20 from Mr.I.  $10 automatically goes into your personal student account, and you make your $20 back by selling the candy.  I keep monthly records of all the student transactions and student profit.  Candy CANNOT be sold at school during school hours!  You must keep your supply in your locker until after school hours (3:00)...do not carry them around with you.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2008

I hope everyone had a great summer and are celebrating the last few days of it before school starts up again!  This is just a quick heads up on the things to expect in September and a small taste of what will be happening this school year.

First and foremost, we have to assemble our Pep Band.  The current schedule is posted in the CALENDAR link.  The schedule is flexible for those with sports conflicts so please know your schedules and plan around ours.  Be responsible and get on your coaches for your practice and game schedules.  Our first game is scheduled for Sept. 19th.  Remember, Pep Band counts the most towards Honor Band credit and is a great way to advance on your instrument.

Our first department performance is scheduled for Thursday, September 11th at 7:00PM at the memorial by the pond.  The Band will be playing "God Bless America" and "The Star Spangled Banner" which will be the first selections we will be working on in period zero.  Our veterans should have copies of this already as we practiced them in June.  BE LEADERS!!  There will be a decent influx of frosh that will need a lot of guidance and good examples set for them.  Do this well and do it with pride.  We had a successful year last year that we want to grow from so again...BE LEADERS!!

For our concerts, we will follow suit from the last few years.  Winter Concert: white tops and black bottoms and Spring/Festival: all black.  Please take care of this ASAP so you're not looking for clothes the day before a concert OR show up for a concert wearing inappropriate attire (which seems to happen a lot).  For inexpensive concert attire visit www.concertattire.com.  They have very reasonable prices and have package deals from top to bottom.  I have actually ordered tuxedo shirts and accessories from this company and was very pleased with the service and quality.

We are currently planning our festival trip to be at Myrtle Beach this year!  Mr. Adams and I have been crunching numbers and itineraries and so far things are looking good.  We are currently looking for a bus company that can guarantee their price and not slap us with a fuel surcharge like they did last year.  However, the trip price is quite high and will not be released until we get a solid number.  But be warned, for Myrtle Beach it will cost more than last year.  We will be restarting candy sales this year along with all of our usual fundraising programs.  Please get involved with as much of them as possible so you can participate!

I am looking forward to seeing everyone again and I am looking forward to another great school year!
