Pop the Corn - It's Movie Time!
- Napoleon Dynamite
- Tall, skinny, gangly teenager growing up in Idaho...but this is not your typical teen-outsider film. Napoleon is a well-drawn character as are all the rest. Amazingly, none come across as stereotypes to me! This film is as real as it is quirky.
- 13 Conversations About One Thing
- This is a beautifully written, directed, and acted film that reiterates John Donne's philosophy about men and islands and the idea of six degrees of separation. We watch the lives of people affect others without them knowing it with subtle shifts in time, and the "thing" they all talk about is. . .well, I don't want to spoil it for you. Very thought-provoking and intelligent and human.
- Monsoon Wedding
- A modern Indian woman consents to a marriage arranged by her parents. This multi-storyline movie has wonderful characters, scenery, drama, comedy, and romance. In English and with subtitles.
- Scotland, PA
- It's 1972, and a husband and wife believe it's worth the risk to kill the owner of a local hamburger joint who just thought of building a drive-thru window. Very cool, well-written, and well-acted updated version of Macbeth
- Amélie
- A young woman raised by incredibly neurotic and cold parents finds a toy box, and everything changes. This is funny, witty, charming, magical, sad, imaginative--just about perfect! I saw the French with English subtitles version on the big screen. If you watch it on tape or DVD, make sure it's the letterbox edition; otherwise, you'll miss out on wonderful visuals that add so much to the total feel of the film.
- Songcatcher
- A musicology professor early in the 20th century, faced with the denial of tenure in part because of her gender, spends the summer nursing her wounds with her sister in the mountains of North Carolina. She discovers the local music and the people who sing and play it, and begins the arduous task of catching the songs on cylinders and paper.
- The Interview
- A gripping, well-written and -acted drama centered around the questioning of a suspect in a stolen car case that could be connected to a serial killer. An import from Australia.
- Local Hero
- Witty, quirky, charming tale about a Texas oilman sent to purchase a piece of Scotland; perfectly written, performed, and photographed
- Eating Raoul
- A nutritionist and a wine connoisseur take to murdering kinky-sex clients to make the money necessary to start their own restaurant. Enter Raoul...{this is NOT an x-rated film, but it does have its share of dark and racy humor}
