Welcome to the Home Page of

M.H.E. Priest

So GeoCities is closing up shop and leaving us high and dry. However, my stories will still have a place on the WWW at mhepriest.bravehost.com, where the home page is way more updated than this one. Until then, still for your consideration:

Starsky & Hutch Fanfiction

Stories are now listed in chronological order by their dates in this particular take of mine of the S&H universe (in other words, these stories started off as independent of each other, except for series, but I keep weaving them together). However, I've written them so it shouldn't matter much if you read them in some other order.

INTRODUCING. . .The Byline Alternate Universe Series
Hutchinson's a reporter, Starsky's a photographer, and Dobey's their editor. Will investigative journalism ever be the same?

Stargate SG-1 Fanfiction

These stories appear chronologically by episode, not by date of completion.

Recommended Reading - Fiction

  • Artemis Fowl
A ruthless twelve-year-old human genius holds a fairy hostage for the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Clever, witty, with the added plus of a code to solve.
  • The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Hamilton
This is Buffy taken up a notch. Or four. Great premise, wonderful writing style, cool story with "hot" touches. I've only read the first one, but do intend on reading the others. (First in the series: Guilty Pleasures)
  • The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife by Pullman
The first two of three sci-fi/fantasy/adventure books; haven't yet read the third one, The Amber Spyglass. It's on my reading list...along with many others.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Lee
Who hasn't read this classic tale of love, maturing, and acceptance?
  • The Dave Robicheaux series by Burke
The very gritty story of a Vietnam vet turned New Orleans cop with a significant alcohol problem. (First in the series: The Neon Rain)
  • The Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
The deliciously and subtly tongue-in-cheek adventures of three orphaned siblings (First in the series: The Bad Beginning)
  • The Things They Carried by O'Brien
This heart-wrenching, passionate "story" presents a number of characters in their childhoods, in the Vietnam jungles, and back home decades after the war.

Recommended Reading - Non-fiction

  • Plague Time by Ewald
Are chronic ailments such as heart disease caused by bacteria, viruses, and other germs? This pioneer in evolutionary biology presents convincing theory and evidence that infections and their accompanying inflammation may be the primary causes of heart disease and cancers.
  • A Piece of My Heart by Walker
This is the compliation of the stories of 26 American women who served in different capacities in Vietnam. Very intense.
  • The Coming Plague by Garrett
If this isn't enough to give you a paranoid fear of germs, it will at least make you think twice before asking for antibiotics to treat a cold.
  • Textual Poachers: Television Fans & Participatory Culture by Jenkins
It's about writers and readers of fan fiction!
  • Ain't Nobody's Business if You Do by McWilliams
This presents the case against making crimes out of consensual activities such as prostitution.

Recommended Listening

  • Willis Alan Ramsey - Willis Alan Ramsey
Kinda country, kinda pop music - great lyrics and melodies
  • This Time - Al Jarreau
One of this jazz singer's early albums
  • The Book of Secrets - Loreena McKennett
In a search for the music of the Celts' contemporaries, she veers off to Rome, Istanbul, etc.
  • Lay Down and Love It Live - SONIAdada
It doesn't get much better than this bluesy group's offering.
  • Donna Summer - Donna Summer
Produced by Quincy Jones; her rendition of Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life will leave you breathless and close to tears.
  • Scheherazade - various orchestras
Romantic, opulent symphony; hands down, my favorite

Pop the Corn - It's Movie Time!

  • Napoleon Dynamite
Tall, skinny, gangly teenager growing up in Idaho...but this is not your typical teen-outsider film. Napoleon is a well-drawn character as are all the rest. Amazingly, none come across as stereotypes to me! This film is as real as it is quirky.
  • 13 Conversations About One Thing
This is a beautifully written, directed, and acted film that reiterates John Donne's philosophy about men and islands and the idea of six degrees of separation. We watch the lives of people affect others without them knowing it with subtle shifts in time, and the "thing" they all talk about is. . .well, I don't want to spoil it for you. Very thought-provoking and intelligent and human.
  • Monsoon Wedding
A modern Indian woman consents to a marriage arranged by her parents. This multi-storyline movie has wonderful characters, scenery, drama, comedy, and romance. In English and with subtitles.
  • Scotland, PA
It's 1972, and a husband and wife believe it's worth the risk to kill the owner of a local hamburger joint who just thought of building a drive-thru window. Very cool, well-written, and well-acted updated version of Macbeth
  • Amélie
A young woman raised by incredibly neurotic and cold parents finds a toy box, and everything changes. This is funny, witty, charming, magical, sad, imaginative--just about perfect! I saw the French with English subtitles version on the big screen. If you watch it on tape or DVD, make sure it's the letterbox edition; otherwise, you'll miss out on wonderful visuals that add so much to the total feel of the film.
  • Songcatcher
A musicology professor early in the 20th century, faced with the denial of tenure in part because of her gender, spends the summer nursing her wounds with her sister in the mountains of North Carolina. She discovers the local music and the people who sing and play it, and begins the arduous task of catching the songs on cylinders and paper.
  • The Interview
A gripping, well-written and -acted drama centered around the questioning of a suspect in a stolen car case that could be connected to a serial killer. An import from Australia.
  • Local Hero
Witty, quirky, charming tale about a Texas oilman sent to purchase a piece of Scotland; perfectly written, performed, and photographed
  • Eating Raoul
    A nutritionist and a wine connoisseur take to murdering kinky-sex clients to make the money necessary to start their own restaurant. Enter Raoul...{this is NOT an x-rated film, but it does have its share of dark and racy humor}
