History of the Flag Pole Hole
The "Flag Pole Hole" was invented when a disc golf course was envisioned on the slopes of the Buffalo Ski Club.  This beautiful piece of property in the hills of Western New York was literally unused in the off season, which happens to be the right season for disc golf.  The slopes and trails, with their changes in elevation and natural "fairways" were a perfect venue to design a disc golf course.

I needed to be able to temporarily mark the holes, and of course, play a few rounds.  I made flagsticks out of 2x2s and some heavy duty nylon material that I painted numbers 1 through 18 on.  I still have these and have used them dozens of times to set courses up at the ski club, at parks, and even throughout my neighborhood where I had my first official tournament "party".

As easy as it was, I had to lug 18 pieces of "lumber" around and a sledge hammer to set up the course.  It required driving my Explorer from hole to hole to set up and pick up the course.  I did it dozens of times before I decided to make the flagsticks lighter and easier to set in the ground.

I had played disc golf at a real golf course at night and liked the idea of using a real golf flagstick as a lighter target.  These turned out to be quite expensive to buy, so I decided to make some.  (Stealing is not an option, so don't even think it).

I designed a golf-like flagstick which was light, durable, and could be separated into two pieces so it is easier to put in your car, and carry in a bag.  The joint also allowed me to place a small disc or plastic plate at the middle of the flagstick so the legal striking part of the flagstick is the same height as the basket on other pole hole targets.  I then developed a feature to be able to easily stick it into the ground.

While this was going on, I set up a manufacturing process and began making the "Flag Pole Holes".  The process has been refined, quality control is in place, and capacity is being developed.  I have sent samples to several disc golf dealers and they were enthusiastic about the product.
