Hello Elizabeth,
I have just come across your site.
Can I point out a problem.

The Katherine Spokes who married William Ezekiel Collins in 1873 was not the daughter of James Spokes of Colac.

She was a sister of my grandmother, Elizabeth Cooper Spokes, and a daughter of Thomas Spokes and Charlotte Dickins, who married in Northampton, England in 1846.

Charlotte was the daughter of FRANCES COOPER, not Elizabeth Cooper (as shown in the Death Index).

Charlotte brought only 2 CHILDREN with her - Charlotte (Lotte, who was crippled) b.30/1/1847, and K(C)atherine, b.1/4/1852, the young son Thomas John having died 14/4/1858.

Elizabeth Cooper Spokes was born at Sandhurst, 9/7/1859.

I also have several documents that lead me to understand that Thomas was not a brother of James. HIs parents were living in St. Mary Street, All Saints Parish in Northampton town, when he was born, 29/11/1809, not Holcot. I have a photocopy of the birth record.

Subject: Thomas and Mary Spokes in Northampton
I was at my local Family History Centre today looking at the Holcot Parish Registers - and I can confirm that James was born to Thomas and Mary Spokes in Holcot. Thomas is listed as a Labourer -
I found Thomas Spokes of All Saints and Mary Dickens getting married June 11, 1807.
I have baptism dates only as these dates come from the Holcot Parish Registry.

William Dec 26, 1814
Keziah Nov 6, 1815
George Nov 11, 1818
James April 22, 1820
William Jan 29, 1826
John Aug 27, 1826
I found James (Labourer) and Hannah Spokes of Holcot having - Eliza June 25, 1843 and Joseph March 28, 1845.
I found Thomas' burial January 21st, 1840 he was 51 and a Mary Spokes (I assume its yours) March 9, 1851 at the age of 63.

I have a friend who has the 1841 census cd and he looked up Spokes for us in 1841 in Holcot and it is attached for your review.

Poor Mary is a pauper I guess as Thomas had just died in 1840.

From on Sat, 25 Jan 2003 and 27 Nov 2005

Hello there,
I just happened to come across James Spokes on your web site . He was my great grand father I think, my dads name Ronald Alexander Joseph Spokes.
I am sending you some family photographs, especially Hannah's Chair, brought by her from England, so she would have a comfortable place to sit during the voyage.

From Jackie Baldwin on Tue, 6 Apr 2004 (Email bounced 3 Mar 2008)

My name is Jackie Baldwin I have been tracing my husbands family tree for about 15 years, his mother's maiden name is Spokes.

Your James Spokes b.1820 is the brother of George Spokes b.1818 c.
George married Mary Tebbutt 1837, his son George married Sarah Ann Linney 1867, his son Thomas married Ellen Julia King 1891, His son Sidney married Doris Simpson 1928, their daughter Margaret is my mother in law.

It was interesting to see your side of the tree. I was given quite alot of info years ago about Hannah Hull's family with a picture of a chair she took with her to Australia.

I have traced quite a large number of the Spokes in the UK, unfortunately some of the info, especially on the IGI is not correct, one American tracing George Spokes seems to be posting incorrect items and dates, and all in the wrong places.

If I can be of any help, please contact me. Regards, Jackie

Hi Elizabeth, Thanks for your quick response! Many years ago when I was just dabbling in Spokes research I received info from an Irene Spokes Zapelli. Is research connected with hers? Apart from hers and now excitedly yours I have little on the Spokes. I do have a photo of Stephen Spokes with his grandchildren. Recently I discovered the Women's Suffrage Petition and found Helen Spokes name on it. She had many intense years of child bearing and died young. She signed the petition in Colac the year before her death.
Kind Regards
Chris
