From Rootsweb 7 Sep 2000, Can anyone please give me any information on Messrs Hunt, James Opie, Tristram Opie and John Michael Opie who operated and worked in the Victoria Foundry in Ballarat. I would particularly like to find out if they brought the machinery to operate the foundry with them from Perranarworth, Cornwall, or did they make it themselves here.
John Michael Opie was my g-grandfather and had two sons (Fred and Harry) and several daughters Ellen (Nellie), Edith Jane, Katherine Hilda (Kate), May and Mabel who both died as infants, Emmaline Gertrude (Gert), and Lillian Clara. Can anybody connect with these people would like to find out who the girls and Harry married please.

From a Rootsweb posting dated 9 Jun 2001, My g-grandfather, John Michael OPIE emigrated from Perranarworthal in Cornwall to Ballarat in 1863 with his married brother Tristram Opie. They came out to join another brother James who had come out in 1849 and who had a successful iron foundry in Ballarat. James had married a Perranarworthal girl, Grace Rawlings in Melbourne after they had come out on the same ship in Dec 1849.
In 1866, Tristram Opie's wife Sara and children came out to join James, Grace, Tristram and John, accompanied by Grace's younger sister Ellen Rawlings. In 1867, John married Ellen in Ballarat but they moved to Melbourne after a few years.. John and Ellen were my g-grandparents . Their son John Frederick Opie married my grandmother, Annie Hastie in 1909 at her parents home in Cunderdin, W.A. I have absolutely NO IDEA how John Frederick Opie met Annie Hastie.

Hunt & Opie, Victoria Foundry, Ballarat, Australia

Messrs. Oakley established this foundry prior to 1856, but from that date was known as Victoria Foundry and was located in Armstrong Street South, Ballarat. James Hunt and James Michael Opie took over the business in October 1861. The foundry built its first stationary steam engine in 1858, an 11-inch cylindered machine for a mine at Smythesdale. By 1861 they employed 100 hands
Hunt & Opie built the locomotive "Lady Barkly" in November 1861, for James R. Davies, a civil engineer on the Geelong-Ballarat railway construction. It was constructed under the supervision of William Errington. The locomotive remained unsold until 1863
James Hunt bought out Opie about 1869 and in 1871 built his next locomotive, a 3ft 6inch gauge 0-4-0 well tank engine named "Ballaarat" for the Western Australian Timber Company
Victoria Foundry closed in 1873 following the illness of James Hunt, selling his interest to Phoenix Foundry, established in 1855, but did not enter into locomotive manufacturing until 1871.
By 1873, the Phoenix Foundry had received its first contract for Government engines and would go on to dominate the foundry business in Ballarat, eventually building 361 locomotives until closure in 1906.
The "Lady Barkly" was brought to New Zealand and used initially on the unsuccessful Invercargill Railway. The locomotive did not suit the wooden rails, but was later used on a bush tramway after being converted to an 0-4-0 and regauged.
