A disastrous fire occurred at Chiltern Valley No2 in the early hours of Friday morning April 8th, when a 5 roomed Egyptian Villa owned and occupied by Mr. Nicholas Beard was completely demolished. It appears that Mrs Beard retired to bed at midnight leaving a lighted lamp on the table. She awoke about 2 O'clock and found the back portion of the house in flames. She immediately called her son who is about 15 years of age who was sleeping in an adjourning room. They were only able to escape with the clothes they were wearing on the precious night before retiring to bed.
Mr. Beard and his daughters were absent in Wangaratta at the time, another son who was working at the Chiltern Valley No2 Mine saw the fire and hurried home but could tender no assistance.
