Hinneberg

From on Thu, 16 Sep 2004

I came across your site some time ago and have found it a very useful source of information.
I thought I should send you some information to correct a minor error re the Hinneberg family on the Diggelman page where the sister of Frederick and Christophe, Rosina Wilhelmina Hinneberg, wed Wilhelm Gottfried Ferdinand Eltze, and their daughter Louise Friderike Eltze wed August Johann Diggelmann.

It appears the Hinneberg family did not arrive in Australia on the ship Leontine (as is stated in a number of sources), Rather they arrived (in Melbourne) Oct 1854 on the Malvina Vidal with their mother (Marie Christiane Lehmann my GGG Aunt) and stepfather (Adolf Berkholz). Marie seems to have died soon after arrival on the Hinneberg. Children became wards of their Uncle Johann Gottlieb. Adolf Berkholz remarried on 1 July 1856 to Elizabeth Richards and registered 2 dau in Victoria, Edith 1869 and Alice 1872.

See my web pages
Leontine, Malvina Vidal, Johann Gottlieb Lehmann

For more details. It was Karen Anne Bartlett (the author of the email reproduced on the page mentioned who brought this to my attention. Arrival in Australia details are provided on the Hinneberg's naturalization certificates (available on-line at naa.gov.au).

Hi, I was wondering where you got the info from for Charles Hinneberg (parents Heinrish and Kate Goodland) I think this is incorrect because Charles's wedding certificate says his parents are Friedrich and Johanna Kroschel??
Look forward to hearing from you
Lillian Clark

There were 2 boys called Charles born in early 1870s -
Charles Frederick Hinneberg registered at Mtro 1872 #18511 son of Henry and Kate Goodland

Charles Frederick William Hinneberg registered at Mt Rouse 1873 #26046 son of Fredk and Johanna Kroschel
Chas Fred Wm Hinneberg wed 1896 #5821 to Elizth Emily Sulman

So two brothers Hinneberg sons of Joanna, aged 12 years apart, both liked the name Charles/Carl And elder son of Joanna wed Ruby Forrester, year after young bro wed Elizabeth Emily Lindner and went to Ouyen two sisters Sulman wed two brothers Alfred and Charles sons of Kate

See web page Malvina Vidal immigrants wrongly thought Adelaide was 10 miles west of Melbourne, not 350 English miles as they discovered on arrival
From Port Phillip Herald, Fri 6 Oct 1854, Page 4, Malvina Vidal arrived 5 Oct, a Dutch ship 959 tons from Hamburg 11 July, with 277 steerage passengers and 3 named as Cabin passengers for Melbourne.
According to the official passenger list, 254 Germans and Wends disembarked at Melbourne, the remaining passengers and cargo including a number of German shepherds specially recruited for the Australian Agricultural Company in New South Wales, plus 26 Saxon merino rams, 26 Saxon merino ewes, ten Mecklenberg ewes and three sheepdogs, bound for New South Wales. On 12 October 1854, most of the Wends boarded the coastal steamer Havilah at Coles' Wharf and left Melbourne for Adelaide, where they arrived four days later.
