Dear Elizabeth,
I have found some information and have emailed to Lynne the following info.
Our John Thomas Holmes was born at Batesford (near Geelong) 7 June 1851 and he married Isabella Spence Stewart in 1883, she was born 1861 at Ercildoune Vic. so dates are similar, but no John Thomas in their family either - their family were Isabella (Belle), Amelia Jane (Millie - possibly who my mother was named after), Charles William (Charlie) and Annie. Hoping this clears up one mystery but doesn't help Lynne except to eliminate one theory.

Two called John Thomas Holmes

Holmes is a site with John Thomas Holmes, as part of family.
Mary Anne Murphy married George Fox on the 20 November, 1845, Yass. George Fox died on the 24 June, 1847, Goulburn. Mary Ann then married John Holmes on the 11 June, 1848.

John Holmes (born 1 January, 1847 in Goulburn took the surname Holmes) and Mary Ann Clarke (born in Braidwood) were married on the 12 August, 1875, Bombala According to the certificate, John would have been born c.1847-48 and Mary Ann c.1860.

John Thomas Holmes was born in Bombala in 1887 and died on the 26 September, 1917 in France during World War I.

Wrongly listed by me as Percy and Vera
From a Cousin whose email bounced 28 Nov 2004
You mention a William Hooks, born Tarnagulla 1853. He was actually born in Millicent, South Australia, Oct, 1854 and given the names William George Glen Vansittart Hooks, 2nd, 3rd and 4th forenames after the owners of the Murraya Station where Robert and Prudence were indentured as farm labourers after their arrival from Ireland. He married a Mary Ann Bradford in Coburg in 1889. They had children William Harold (Fitzroy, 1890) and Ellen Ann (Echuca, 1892). I know nothing of the Percy and Vera you list and am very interested.

Perhaps I am the cousin whose e mail on Hooks bounced in 2004? My e mail address now Our Hooks info does not fully equate. Tony Anderson (descended from Prudence (nee Anderson) Hooks's brother William).

And on Tue 16 Jan 2007,

My name is Tony Anderson, I am descended from William Anderson whose sister Prudence married Robert Hooks in Down before coming to Australia. I notice on your site that you have Robert and Prudence going to Sandhurst before moving on to Dunolly. I am wondering what the evidence for this is. The Hooks were indentured as labourers to William Vansittart, who had the Muyurra run at Millicent after they disembarked from the Hooghly at Portland early 1855. I don't know how long they stayed at Mayurra. Vansittart was killed in late Nov that year and the Hookses first child was born on Mayurra about three weeks before his death and was subsequently given the names William George Glen Vansittart Hooks (George Glen was in partnership with Vansittart). The next official notice I have of them is from April, 1857 when they registered at Dunolly the birth of a daughter (that registration is listed on the same page in the registration book as Prudence's brother William's son, John Joseph, born around the same time in early 1857. The Hookses and the Andersons were obviously mining together at Dunolly, then at its most active as a diggings. The registration papers state the occupations of both fathers as diggers.

If you think the Hookses were at Sandhurst going to Dunolly can you let me know what the evidence is? I have over the last ten years written a very precise history of the Andersons based on careful use of documentary evidence which includes information on Robert and Prudence Hooks and if there is anything I have missed I would love to know.

I would be very happy to hear from you.
Many thanks,
Tony Anderson
