I was interested in James Michael Gabel, who married Olivia Enderby, which led me to Charles and Ellen Kerwin.

Charles Gabel died aged 37, so Ellen would possibly marry again.
I did a search for Ellen Kerwin and the most likely match was Murphy.
Another search led to William Murphy of Cork, wed 1878 #1944 to Ellen Kerwin.
They registered what looks like three daughters, Minnie 1879 #2618, Minnie 1880 #8847 and Mary 1882 #14360 who died aged 9 months. The births took place in Fitzroy and Carlton, inner suburbs of Melbourne.

Ellen's surname is Kerwin, Kewn and Kirwan - a common happening with unusual names.

All the above was because I could not find Ellen's death! Buying the marriage certificate would cost $Aust 17.50 and the web address appears to be http://www.justice.vic.gov.au/

The last detail comes from Page 44 of the Nov 2002 issue of 'Australian Family Tree Connections' which calls itself the independent monthly for Australian and New Zealand Family Historians. You are probably familiar with it, has good articles on solving family problems.

If she is 'our' Ellen, there should be details of her previous marriage, and her parents names and her birth place - a lot of treasures if the idea is correct.

Now I have found
Mary Ellen Gabel died at Cheltenham, 1919 #5925 aged 84 daughter of Cath Hanrahan and Patrick Kirwin
which gives a birth year of 1835 - close enough to be 'our girl'.

The first name Mary had put me off.
