William Atkinson was born 6 Apr 1831 at Bank End, Windermere to Jane Rigg and William Atkinson. His great uncle was Jonathan Otley of Grasmere. He emigrated 18 Sep 1857 from Liverpool on the King of Algeria, arriving Melbourne, Victoria on 19 Dec 1857.
The family have a crest and motto - Firm ever firm.
William Atkinson and Jane Rigg had three children at Windermere, England.

2. Jonathan Otley Atkinson 1 June 1832 - 22 July 1895, known as Otley Atkinson, Dentist, died childless
3. Bridget Atkinson 1840 - 23 Jan 1903 aged 63, died unmarried and I assume childless.
William's brother, Jonathan Otley Atkinson, and his sister Bridget Atkinson, both stayed in Kendal, England.

William Atkinson, born at Windermere, UK, arrived in Melbourne 19 Dec 1857 on King of Algeria He married 15 May 1860 at Brighton Victoria to Sophia Thomas and died 26 July 1900 aged 69 years and was buried at Brighton.
Sophy Thomas born 21 Nov 1836 at Parramatta, daughter of Joseph Thomas, died 14 June 1917 aged 81 years and is also buried at Brighton, whith her husband, father and children.

Six miners, JA Thurston, K Atkinson, HJ Hinwood, TG Mason, HE Petterson, K Malicki, a medical assistant RG Pickwell and a clerk L Odgers in the Sepic district in the north were cut off by the Japanese invasion, and decided to overland to Australia.
April 17 they elected Thurston leader, Petterson was cook, Atkinson and Hinwood were in charge of erecting huts, Odgers was in charge of keeping records and purchasing foodstuffs from the natives. They hired 80 carriers and guides as each district was journeyed through.

I found a death for Mercer, Isabella nee Atkinson died at Moonie Ponds 1946 aged 72 - which gives a birth year of 1874 and fits our Isabella.

I found a death for Arthur Mercer 1891 - 1966 aged 75, and his parents are listed as Caroline Louise Hearle and James Stewart Mercer. This is not Isabella Atkinson's husband.
Nor is Arth Albt Edw Mercer 1871 #15420 wed 1899 #4483 to Ethel Frances Lyon Chadwick

9. Jonathan Otley Atkinson 28 Dec 1876 - 10 Oct 1961 died in New Zealand married Katherine Feb 1904. Childless.
