Akers Reunion

A re-union was held at Tarnagulla, Victoria for the Descendants of Hiram AKERS who married Elizabeth MEDWIN in Stanley Tas in 1849 and subsequently married Thomasina CORNISH in 1852 at St James Old Cathedral, Melbourne.

Re-union date: 27 March 2005 (Easter Sunday)
Time: 10am until you are finished talking
Where: The Historic Tarnagulla Hall (in the main street)
Meals: BYO Everything. There is a park next door for picnics with barbecue facilities.

Hiram Akers aged 20, shoemaker, was tried 30 June 1840 at Stafford Quarter Session for stealing trowsers. Embarked 25 May 1841, sailed 7 June and arrived at Hobart 4 Oct 1841.
The arrival date suggests the vessel is the David Clarke, a barque of 608 tons built at Calcutta 1817, with 307 convicts delivered after a voyage of 119 days from Plymouth
Hiram is described as 5 ft 2.5 inches tall, brown hair, hazel eyes, scars on each cheek. He received his Ticket of Leave 17 Nov 1846 and was discharged 30 Jan 1849. In 1843 he was in trouble for possessing tobacco.

Hiram Akers aged 25 wed 5 June 1849 to Elizabeth Medwin aged 18, both made their marks, in the presence of Edwin Medwin and Mary Atkins at St Paul's Church, Stanley, Tasmania. Elizabeth was a daughter of William Medwin and Elizabeth Sarah Cock. On the same day Sarah Medwin aged 16 wed Robert Latimer 34 schoolmaster with John Medwin as witness. Elizabeth's death is recorded in Victoria 1851 #28482 aged 19, buried from Church of England, St Peters Melbourne

Henry Hiram Akers wed 13 April 1852 #5930 at St James' Melbourne, to Thomasina Cornish and later lived at Tarnagulla.
Hiram died 20 June 1911 aged 89 at Dunolly Hospital and was buried at Tarnagulla Cemetery. His son William, informant for the Death Certificate, stated he was born in Staffordshire, spent 10 years in Tasmania and 61 years in Viictoria. The name of the first wife was not known, her daughter Sophia was aged 64. From the second marriage, three children, Henry, Ann and Albert, were dead, Mary Ann 58, Arthur 53, William 50, Eliza 48 and Selina 46

Thomasina Cornish 1831 - 31 Oct 1909 aged 78, of old age. Her son in law, James Paterson reported she was born at St Coloum, Cornwall, England and about 60 years in Victoria. Thomasina Cornish was a free settler to Australia, who arrived in Victoria as an unassisted passenger aboard the Adelaide in June 1849. Thomasina was 18 years old and travelled with her 26 year old sister Elizabeth. Within the shipping records, Thomasina's occupation was listed as a child maid and her sister as a house servant. They had travelled from their place of birth, Cornwell England".

When Mary Ann's birth 10 Aug 1856 was registered as the fifth child (others not named), Henry stated he was born at Pankridge, Staffordshire and Thomasina was from Kent, England.
