How do we protect our children from the Web's more than
40,000 porn sites?
I'm Bill McCartney... It's 4TH and Goal!
According to U.S. News and World Report, there are over 40,000 porn
sites on the Internet, and many have aggressive marketing strategies to
increase their exposure, so to speak. Fortunately, there are steps
we can take to protect our families.
We would protect our families and ourselves from any potential harm,
right? So why not be proactive and disable the smut on the Internet,
so it can't enter our homes? Plugged In magazine reports that two-thirds
of children ages 2 to 18 have computers at home and 45 percent have Internet
access. And while the Internet is a tremendous learning and communication
resource, it can easily become a nasty houseguest.
For this reason, many "Family Friendly" Internet providers control
the smut. Some services monitor which sites a user can access. Others
focus on the ability to control the amount of time a user spends browsing.
Whether parents are hooking up a home computer to the Web for the
first time, or considering switching their service provider to take advantage
of new filtering technologies, two Web sites can help. Focus on the
Family maintains a directory of more than 50 services at family-dot-org.
Also, GetNetWise, a site produced by several commercial and charitable
groups, provides an interactive database that will direct families to the
service that best meets their needs.
As parents, we do need to keep in mind that no matter what electronic
precautions we employ, we still need to be aware of what our kids are viewing
online. One way to monitor our kids' Net usage is to install the
computer in a busy room, like the kitchen or the family room. That
way, kids will get used to being online in a populated room, frequented
by parents, who care about the sites that influence them.
Let's keep the Internet under control and see that it benefits our
family instead of harming it.
