4th and Goal Commentary - March 7, 2001
What's Your Family's Aroma?
By Bill McCartney
Did you know that, to maintain our emotional and physical health, we should hug and kiss our wives and children at least eight times a day?

I'm Bill McCartney... It's 4TH and Goal!

When was the last time we grabbed our wives and pulled them close just to tell them how much we love them?   Do we call our daughters 'princess', or do we tear them down in front of family and friends?  Do our sons see us as pals to go play catch with?  Or, is 'dad' the guy in front of the TV, not to be disturbed?

Hey, did you know that, especially for the type 'A' personality, hugging our wives and children eight times daily will actually increase our life spans by about two years?  Human beings need to live in a warm, supportive environment.

What kind of environment exists in our homes?  Do our homes purr along like a brand new Mercedes or sputter and backfire like a never-been-tuned 1972 Ford Pinto? Guys, we have a lot to do with the family aroma in our homes.  Aroma stands for Affection, Respect, Order, Merriment, and Affirmation.

If we're affectionate, our wives and children will know they're loved.  If we respect our children and earn their respect, our children will grow up with a healthy concept of authority, and the worth of others.  If our homes have order and well-defined rules, they'll run smoothly and will be a refuge.

If we laugh with our kids, or make routine things fun, we'll develop lasting bonds with them.  Finally, if we affirm our wives and children, they'll have a strong sense of self-worth.

So, how can we develop a pleasant family aroma?  Well, how about planning a Family Fun Night?  We can get out the old photo albums, and share childhood stories with our kids.  We can bring our wives flowers, find a babysitter for the kids, and make a candlelight dinner for her.    On a cold, wintry morning, we could serve breakfast to our families in bed.

These are simple ideas that produce a family aroma to be savored - savored, because it assures our families that we love and cherish them.

I'm Coach Bill McCartney.
