---------------------

We are the MeDiA Activism Club at the Bronx High School of Science in New York City. We meet in Room 009 on Tuesdays after 9th!!

Hundreds of messages from the media are vying for our attention everyday. Just look at Times Square in NYC-- you'lll see what we mean.

Media Activism is a way of expressing different perspectives, separate from the mainstream media which is mostly responsible for the messages being conveyed in the above picture. Media activism is gaining international recognition. People of every age, gender and race are creating videos, movies, films, television programs, songs, radio shows, magazines, web sites, newspapers and books to convey perspectives not seen elsewhere.

People are creating alternatives to what we see in the mainstream media-- CBS, NBC, ABC, The New York Times, The Daily News, Time Magazine and Arista Records-- and these alternatives are being heard and seen. Media Activism means literally being active in the creation of the media. This means one gets involved, actively listening, watching and reading for the biases in the media.

The MeDiA Activism Club is a crucial part of our school environment. We are becoming literate and aware of the media by looking differently at advertising and public service campaigns. We are using what we learn from these techniques to create our own advertisements and public service announcements -- which may show up on WNYE and cable television. We are learning about bias, and how to spot it. We are looking at the mainstream media to learn why it works.

We are making our own media.

In our first year (02-03), we created video public service announcements, video documentaries, learned how to use new technology, had engaging discussions about new topics, experienced the media first hand, exposed ourselves to the knowledge of two inspiring guest speakers, were featured on Bronx public access television, made newsletters, conducted interviews, took photos, sold t-shirts, and we did all of this in just one year.

In our second year (03-04), we added 20 new members from all different grades to our ranks, made three more longer documentary projects, campaigned to help senior students register to vote, hosted another guest speaker, went out to film on location (Hare Krishna meetings; Stuyvesant High School; Jamaica, Queens; Times Square, Grand Central Station...) ranted, analyzed textbooks, staged protests, spoke about issues passionate to us, made works of art, made a PSA for AIDS awareness day, and had an awesome screening. Just think of what we can do next year, with all of this experience behind us. Come on. We know you want to know.

proposal which we submitted to Ms. Reidy this year! Even though it was rejected, we still like the idea, and would love for you to send us a comment about how we can make it more "administration friendly".
