AUGUSTA, GEORGIA
George Walton, was Georgia's youngest signer of the
Declaration of Independence. In 1776, he was a member
of the Council of Safety in Georgia and was a delegate
to the Continental Congress. Walton served as Acting
Commander of the State Militia and was a prisoner of war
during 1778-1779. After the Revolutionary War, Walton
served his state as Governor and Chief Justice. He was
a member of the United States Senate, 1795-1796. George
Walton died on February 2, 1804 in Augusta and is buried
at the Signers Monument on Greene Street.
A visit to Meadow Garden includes:
Tour of 1790-1804 house, showing period furnishings,
and Walton family memorabilia; 1700 Medicinal Herb
Garden; 1700 Kitchen Garden; plantings of flowers,
fruits and shrubbery of the period; 18th and 19th
Century American and English furnishings, porcelains,
paintings, primitive household equipment; and
Museum Shop. Speakers and a slide presentation
of the house and grounds are available.
The House is open Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm,
and by appointment at other times. Group rates
available for over ten people.
