Genesis Part 1, Lesson 8
After the flood God blessed Noah and his family and told them to go forth and multiply. They were to repopulate the world. God promised Noah that He would never again destroy the world by flood and as proof of that promise He placed the rainbow in the sky. The knowledgeable man sees the rainbow and remembers God's promise to Noah to this day.
Man started the task of repopulating the world as God commanded. He came to a plain called Shinar and there decided to build a city. At that time everyone spoke the same language. They found that they could bake bricks and that there was slime available there for mortar so they began to build a tower which they planned would touch the heavens. God decided to visit their tower. (It must be remembered here that God is omnipresent, meaning He is everywhere at the same time, Psalms 139:7-12. By saying God decided to pay a visit to the tower the author means to say that God decided to show a special presence to them. )  Upon His visit to the tower God saw that man was succeeding in the building of the tower and He knew that the tower and the city would prevent man from carrying out His command to repopulate the world. Instead, man was going to settle in one small pocket right there on the plain at Shinar. God could not allow that to happen. Repopulating the world had to be man's priority now. There would be plenty of time for building huge cities later. So God said  "Behold the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. God gave them many different languages and thus drove them to the ends of the earth.  Do you notice any similarity to man today? We'd rather  live with with each other, and depend on each, more than God. Does man ever change?
