Mongolian Development Research Center


  1. Founding
         The Mongolian Development Research Center (MDRC) was established in January 1998 as non-profit non-government organization (NGO) and registered at the Ministry of Justice, Mongolia.
  2. Objectives
         The main objectives of the Center are to promote the knowledge of development economics in Mongolia and to bring together scholars and specialists who are working on formulating a long-term development concept for Mongolia which is based on a comprehensive manner considering geography, culture, tradition, nomadic way of life, and current economic profile of Mongolia.
  3. Priority Directions
    a/ Development Research:
         MDRC organizes working book groups on a non-permanent basis in order to undertake research activities on selected problems of Mongolia’s development.
    b/ Development Training:
         MDRC can conduct short-term seminars and training courses in order to raise the skills of national development economics specialists.
    c/ Development experts support:
         MDRC is willing to support the process of training of national experts on Development economics through various ways.
    d/ Development Education:
         MDRC is committed to popularize development economics knowledge by disseminating information through national media and its own publications, by guiding students diploma works and dissertations for raising the national awareness of development needs.
  4. Current Research Programme
         MDRC has started its first research and training project titled “Mongolia’s development strategy research project” since 1 April 1998 financially supported by the Nippon Foundation of Japan for two year term 1 April 1998 to 31 March 2000. Following works will be done within the framework of that project.
    1. In order to bring impetus to the formulation of national indigenous concept of long-term development MDRC will organize 5 research teams assigned to conduct research on the following 5 themes: “book program on Mongolia’s culture, tradition and socio-economic peculiarities”, “book program on environment and pasture based livestock production”, “book program on national regional zoning and development”, “book program on macro and micro economic aspects”, “book program on national security problems”.
    2. MDRC will organize short-term training course for members of Parliament and some policy-makers on the topic of basic concept of development economics, development lessons of some Asian countries.
    3. MDRC will organize an international conference twice in March 1999 and in March 2000 in order to disseminate the research findings of its book to national experts and international organizations.
    4. MDRC will publish its main research results in Mongolian and English Languages and present it to the President Office, Parliament, Government of Mongolia and to representatives of major donor countries.
  5. Governing Board
         The Governing board consists of following five members:
    1. Ts. Batbayar (Board chairman) – Director, Center of International Studies, Mongolian Academy of Sciences
    2. B. Bathishig (Board member) - Economic Policy Adviser, President Office of Mongolia
    3. B. Dorjgotov (Board member) – Senior officer, Ministry of External Relations, the Government of Mongolia
    4. S. Lhagva (Board member) – Officer, the National Security Council, Mongolia
    5. L. Nyamtseren (Board member) – Senior officer, Ministry of Infrastructure Development, the Government of Mongolia Permanent staff
    6. Mr. D. Amar (Executive director)
  6. Finance
         MDRC is eligible to receive financial support on a project basis from the government. As a non-profit institution, the Center is keen to cooperate with international agencies and foundations, public and private research institutions.
