Jarde heard the insidious slithering death approaching. His blood ran cold. Without another second of hesitation, he grabbed up Caydi and ran toward the farmhouse, not even stopping when he heard the rush of scales behind him. They were fortunate that Vixer acted as bait, covering their flight with his own weak battle with the first reptilian arrivals. Jarde finally stopped when he had several lengths of firm ground beneath him, unable to resist a look back at the frightening scene he imagined. The desert was as serene as if they had never intruded over its border, the sands showing no blood or sign of any battle. Somehow this was more chilling than if he had actually witnessed the man being pulled down in the monstrous coils. But looking at Caydi, he secretly thanked Benygth for his servants' duty. That man, if he could be called that, deserved to reside in His Dark Kingdom.
