Such radio receivers can receive worldwide signals from around the world, including utility signals, and ham radio signals with a variety of modes which can be received by anyone with a computer. One is intercepting "slow scan televsion" when they are sending pictures to each other - no wires, no internet.

These receivers can be had new from digital portables, expensive desktops, used analog radios, or good used transistor or tube sets all over the place from myriad sources.

However, no receiver will be worth its weight in money and satisfaction without a decent antenna to capture as much signal strength with moderate resonance.

This site will consist of the basics for the simplest and most ubiguitous antenna of all time, the dipole. It can be made as cheap as one can right down to using "lamp cord".
