MCNAUGHTON PHOTOS

Eventually I would like this page to have photographs of all the families that descend from John McNaughton of Dunderave. But for the time being I will put some old photos from my own line here. But as other photos come in from the other lines I will add them at the bottom of this page.

The first photograph on this page is of Anna Cameron McNaughton, 2nd wife of Donald McNaughton. Donald's first wife was Elizabeth Kennedy, who brought five children into this world: Margaret, Alexander, Catherine, Thomas and Elizabeth. When Elizabeth Kennedy died while giving birth to her fifth child in 1827 Margaret was ten years old, Alexander was 7, Catherine was nearly 4 and Thomas was 3. Donald married Anna Cameron a year and a half later. Anna_Cameron_McNaughton_abt1890_10.JPG (51056 bytes)

So Anna Cameron was the only mother the younger ones ever knew. Plus, Anna brought five children of her own into the world. In 1832 Anna and her husband Donald McNaughton brought all ten of their children across the ocean and settled in Quebec. Anna was born in 1800 in Inverness Scotland and she died in 1893 in Havelock, Quebec. The venerable and greatly loved matriarch of her large family died at age 93. Anna Cameron, together with her husband Donald drew up a genealogy chart which traces our family back to Thomas and Malcolm MacNauchtan who were born in Dunderave Castle in Argyll, Scotland.

Above, on either side we see pictures of Thomas McNaughton. The middle picture is his wife, Laura (Lawson) McNaughton probably with her son Robert on her lap which would date the photo at right around 1870. The first photo of Thomas must be dated at close to the same time, 1870, from the looks of his youthful appearance. He would have been 46 years old. The picture of Thomas on the right appears to be taken approximately the same time as the family portrait on the front page of the website, about 70. Thomas McNaughton was born in Inverness Scotland in 1824 and crossed the sea with his family in 1831 when he was seven years old. He left Quebec not long after his older brother Alexander. Alexander settled with his family in Iowa around 1858. Thomas is found listed in the St Paul directory in 1860. Around 1865 he met a southern girl, Laura Lawson, and they were married in 1867. They had 3 children, Robert, Rebecca, and Olive. Robert married Sarah Howard and had four sons. Rebecca married Daniel House and they had four children, the oldest of which was Gordon Lysander House who at almost 102 years old is still alive today in 2003. Olive married Henry Flint and they had no children.

KennethMcNaughton_in_kilt_7.jpg (60585 bytes)

This is a  photograph of Robert McNaughton's eldest son Kenneth born in September of 1897. He appears to be a little over two years old in the photo so I figure the photo might have been taken early in the year of 1900. He is wearing a kilt. This is a very pivital photograph I think. I mean it represents a pivital time for our McNaughton ancestors. Because at the time this photograph was taken this McNaughton family was rich with Scottish culture, as represented by the kilt in the photo. Kenneth's grandfather Thomas, was born in Inverness Scotland in 1824, a descendant of the chiefs of Dunderave. He would have so many stories to tell his grandson Kenneth as the lad grew up. But in July of 1900 Thomas drowned in the Mississippi River when horses bolted pulling his wagon into the fast moving river. So he was gone, and all the stories he would have told Kenneth were never told. But the stories had been imparted to Thomas's son Robert and Robert would surely tell the old Scottish stories and traditions to his son Kenneth. But that was not to be either.

Only four years later Robert Watson McNaughton broke his neck diving into the Mississippi River; he lingered a few months and died. What a tragedy for the family. The four sons of Robert Watson McNaughon would be raised without the stories of their Scottish ancestors. Thomas had a brother, Alexander, who lived in Iowa. But that was too far away to have any effect. Much farther away lived the McNaughton cousins of Hemmingford Quebec Canada where the family had homesteaded after emmigrating from Scotland. So the four St Paul Minnesota McNaughton brothers would lose all track of their McNaughton heritage now that Thomas and his son Robert were both dead. There would be no more wee McNaughton kilts for these boys like the one that Kenneth is wearing in the photo. Robert's widow Sarah Howard raised the four boys with the help of her large Howard family. She was a seamstress and dressmaker in St Paul Park. She never remarried. The boys grew up to have fine character.

The above photo dates to about 1904... I have been told this is a photograph of Robert Clifford McNaughton on the left with his brother Russel Louis McNaughton on the right. But Cliff was 3 years older than Russel and in this photo that does not appear to be the case. So I think it is more likely that the two children here are Clifford on the left and his older brother Kenneth on the right.

Musta been about 1950. Grandpa Robert Clifford McNaughton is on the left. His brother Russel Lewis is seated next to him with me in his lap. My dad, Thomas Ross Holme Sr, is next, wearing glasses, and then Russel James McNaughton on the farthest right. (Clifford and Russel are two of the four sons of Robert McNaughton, and grandsons of Thomas.)

Notice the fancy red tall tricycle over on the left. My first wheels...

Here on the right we have a photograph of Alexander McNaughton and his wife Jane Brisbin. Alexander is the older brother of Thomas whose picture and story is at the top of this page. Alexander was born in Inverness Scotland, the eldest son in his family. He came across the sea with his father and mother and brothers and sisters in 1831. He was eleven years old when they arrived in Haveloc Quebec. He learned the carpenter trade and married Jane Brisbin of Covey Hill, Quebec in 1847 and soon started their family. Somewhere between 1856 and 1858 Alexander brought his wife and children to Iowa where they obtained land and farmed. Altogether they had nine children.
