I am a breeder of American Staffordshire Terriers with over 20 yrs experience, and I had Rotts before I got into Staffs, so I have seen my share of dominance fights. One thing you did not touch on, that I thought would give my . 02 worth. When two dogs of a bull-and-terrier type "lockup;" it is very difficult to break the actual jaw lock they have on each other. I have seen two males in high fight drive sneeze and keep grinding their teeth deeper when hit with pepper spray, and of course dogs that have been trained to come on through it (I have two of these) will laugh at it. In these cases, the wheelbarrow method is ineffective, because you need a THIRD person to step in and actually separate their jaws. Since it is not feasible to carry a break stick in your pocket, I can tell you that all the old-time terrier people at dog shows carry smelling salts in their pockets. Terriers are so quick, and can turn and get you so fast if you try to reach between them to separate, that it is not worth the risk; but pop a smelling salt underneath two dogs locked in mortal combat and I guarantee they will break; choking and gasping--they can't breathe if they don't. It does work; I was present at a show in Pennsylvania when two humongous Bull mastiffs decided to kill each other. There were SIX grown men trying to control these two behemoths, and no way were they coming apart. I stepped in and snapped the smelling salts capsule, and in about 15 seconds they broke, choking and wheezing. That sounds like a long time I know, but the fight at this point had been going on for several minutes, with no signs of abating. I did not know if you had ever tried it, but I can tell you all the old-time terrier people always carry two or three capsules in their coat pocket--just in case. . . . . and be quick, don't get your hands in the way. . also we always holler when we do it in a crowd; I understand it can be troublesome to an asthmatic. Until the day I took them to the show using a "SIAMESE CHAIN", that chain is manager with one leash, at the end it has two small "daughters chains" that allow you to manage 2 dogs with one leash. . .
