GROW A CRYSTAL GARDEN

If you want to grow your own crystal garden at home follow the directions below.

REMEMBER:  HAVE A PARENT OR ADULT HELP YOU!!

Materials:

charcoal briquette (1” x 1½ – 2” across)

(per person)

2 small plastic cups (soufflé cup size)

marker

measuring spoons

1 t liquid laundry blueing

1 t water

1t salt (kosher or table salt)

½ t ammonia

stirring stick

food coloring (optional)

  1. Write your name on one plastic cup.
  2. Place the briquette piece into the cup with your name on it.  It should rest on the bottom of the cup.
  3. Combine the water, salt and ammonia in the second cup.
  4. Add liquid blueing.
  5. Pour this mixture over the charcoal pieces.  You should see undissolved salt covering the charcoal.
  6. If you want your crystals to have colors, sprinkle 3-4 drops of food coloring over the mixture in the bowl.
  7. Set the cup in a sunny place where no one will disturb it.
  8. Watch your “garden” grow within an hour or two.  Depending on weather conditions crystals may take longer to get started.  The crystals are very delicate and will crumble if touched.
