Development of a Network Plan for Remnant Ministries

Unit 7: May 21

Tasks

1)    Review potential costs with consideration for ‘non-profit’ status

Completed

Major accomplishments:

After reviewing the local Technical industry and contacting many local companies, I found that all companies we will be dealing with have no discounts for non-profit organizations.  Churches are treated just as if we are any other small business.  This must be factored into our pricing.

2) Review available service providers, building plans and logistics

Completed

Major accomplishments:

Since we cannot afford a T1 connection or the price tag that comes along with it, we must pursue other options. There are three major service providers for internet in our area.  Cox Cable, Sprint DSL, and Keyon Wireless.  All three appear to be available in the location the church is being built (pending a site walkthrough by the companies), so one of our most important criteria is speed.

While Cox and Sprint both offer 5.0 Mbps for their respective high-speed services, Keyon tops out at 1.5 Mbps.  Cox and Sprint have the best connection speeds so we will make the decision between those 2 companies at this time, which eliminates Keyon from the competition.  The Price break down is as follows:

Cox Cable:  99.00

Sprint DSL: 84.00

Keyon Wireless: 119.00

3) Consider timeline and deliverable deadlines

Completed

Major accomplishments:

We are right on schedule to complete our project on time.  Our timeline looks good.

Decisions

We made a very important decision this week.  We have decided on our ISP.  We will be using Sprint DSL.  Sprint’s speed is equal to Cox but for a more affordable price.  We were very happy we found 5.0 Mbps for under $100.00 dollars.

Learning

1)    What helpful feedback did you get in the class (instructor, classmates) and outside the class (user, stakeholder, beneficiary, mentor, expert advisor, others)? What did you learn from this feedback?

Most of the feedback this week came from contacting businesses this week.  We were surprised to find out that most businesses do not offer a non-profit discount.  Non-profit businesses are treated just like any other small business.

2)      What resources did you use this week (e.g., people, money, equipment, systems, or software)? Did you add new resources? What was your learning?

Most of the resources I used this week were local ISP’s and the internet.  I learned that we will use Sprint DSL and the price will be under 100 dollars.

I was very happy to find a well-established internet service provider for an affordable price.

3)    What research did you perform this week that was assisting and/or literature based? What is your findings/learning?

Most of the research done this week focused on internet service providers.  I was surprised to find 2 options that were very affordable that would meet our needs.

Research Question:

Why does my business need Broadband internet access?

Answer/Learning:

The article discusses the advantages of having broadband internet for business.  The article also discussed it is a big financial benefit to have broadband.  The primary focus of Remnant Ministries is not to make money, but having broadband internet and an internal network setup will help increase communication both with internal staff and the outside world.

Indicators

I am very well prepared to conclude my network plan in Unit 10

4)    How likely is it that you will need to resort to your contingency plan?

At this point, there is no need to resort to the contingency plan.
