Pigeon, Pigeon, Pigeon, Pigeon...
Nearly a week, and M & D still hadn't seen Amsterdam! Okay, well, Dan had been a couple of times before, but Matt hadn't. We had all agreed on what we wanted to see in Amsterdam : the Heinekin Brewery, the Rijks Museum, and the Van Gogh Museum, for starters. Ah, culture in Amsterdam! A full day's agenda, so we agreed to get up early. And of course parking is impossible, so we were going to take the train.
The alarm clock went off, D & M were roused, and Marnix and I got ready to go. Cups of weiner were made, tickets were bought, seats were found, and off we went! We were so together that we even got to Amsterdam well before the Heinekin Brewery was supposed to open. Everyone hopped on a tram, and we rode through the city to the nearest stop. Since we hadn't had time for breakfast, we made our way to a small bakery and bought some bread and orange juice. It was a chilly but sunny so we crossed the street and sat on a little bench to eat. There were of course the obligatory pigeons waddling around us, waiting to pick up dropped crumbs. D had already finished his bread and was apparently getting a bit antsy when the pigeons caught his eye. What followed next is something that I would like to call "Dan's Patented Pigeon Polka." Words could never do this justice, but I'll give it a try. Dan did his best impression of a pigeon waddle, with his own touch of enthusiasm. I couldn't help but laugh as he half-bounced, half-waddled after a pigeon calling out to it: "Pigeon, pigeon, pigeon, pigeon!" I did, however, feel affronted on behalf of the pigeons, so I told him to stop in my own way: "Dan!" He kept doing it, and I kept calling his name, and before we knew it, it had turned into a sort of twisted game that went something like this: "Pigeon, pigeon, pigeon, pigeon... Daaan!" By the end of the day, Dan was just saying it to get me to do my little part. Hmm... I guess you just had to be there.
