THE
CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION
So to Philly once more, the landÕs ablest were sent
To tend the poor health of their new government.
One by one they arrived to Independence Hall,
To air doubts and concerns and to heed a grave call.
ÔTwas 1787 and some fifty-five men
Spent their summer in search of a more perfect
union.
And in a stifling hot room, near choking with tension,
The delegates began their historic convention.
They set right to work, to tough problems address,
Rolling sleeves up, to get down to business.
-- With some well recalling how eleven years prior
They did light in those halls a revolutionÕs fire.
And of all the great men who that season appeared
As our Founding Fathers they are forever revered.
Ben Franklin was there, a man most seasoned and wise
To turn bitter disputes into fine compromise.
While VirginiaÕs James Madison brought with him a mind
Well-versed in the laws of every land one could find.
So from all ages and epochs, they might rest assured:
The lessons of history would light the way
forward.
And one smart New Yorker, Alexander Hamilton,
Argued all to make stronger their national union.
So no matter which state a man was a denizen,
HeÕd be first of all things an American citizen.
Yes, a fly on that wall would have some story to
share,
A-buzz with true greatness at every table and chair.
-- G. Washington himself was there asked to preside
With a young nationÕs fate in their hands to decide.
And ideas were debated from most subtle to bold,
As they drafted new plans to better govern the fold.
ÔTil born of their labors, a momentous solution:
The Supreme Law of the Land, The U.S.
Constitution.
