Waimea

Cheryl, who was a bit unsure at the onset of the hike-was completely floored by the spiritual manifestations of the Kohala rainforest. The sleepy town of Waimea is small and friendly, got some good eats, and is only 10 minutes from the Kohala coast. Yet it is worlds away from the beach resorts. The Hamakua ditch brings water from the east side of Hawaii and was dug by Japanese laborers about 85 years ago. The craftsmanship, considering the age, is impeccable. This hike follows along the ditch and is in the backdoor of Waipio valley, considered by some the spiritual center of Hawaii. Here kings and queens are laid to rest in cliffside dwellings with giant canoes and many other artifacts from the days of old. This hike is truly awe inspiring.
