Guidelines for Conference Travel Funding Applications
The 2003-2004 MASA executive are pleased to introduce a new conference travel fund for MASA members.  While the support available through this fund may be small, we feel that it is important for students to become involved in scholarly conferences and as such we are prepared to initiate fundraising efforts directed to increasing the amounts awarded.  There will be some growing pains as we work through the initial set-up and disbursement of funds, so please be patient with us.
This fund is intended to provide paid MASA members with financial support to attend a conference relevant to their discipline at which they will present a paper, or otherwise benefit academically. Preference will be given to students who have an active role within the conference or workshop.  Students who receive an award from this fund may wish to include it on their resume under the title "Manitoba Anthropology Students Association Conference Travel Award".

Other sources of funding should be pursued, including UMSU's SiGPAC program, the Arts Student Body Council, and the Alumni Association. Students who have obtained funding from these, or other sources, may still apply to MASA, but total funding cannot exceed normal travel expenses.

Policy:
1. The total allocation for funding of student travel will be entirely dependant on the fundraising efforts in the prior year.
2.  No student will be funded more than once in the academic year.
3.  The maximum allocation will be $50.
4.  To be eligible for a travel award, a student must be:
     a paid MASA member
currently enrolled in the Department of Anthropology
presenting a paper, or able to justify their attendance, at the conference or workshop.

Procedure:
There will be 2 competitions, with deadlines of October 1 for conferences taking place between September and February, and April 1 for conferences held between March and August. Applications will be assessed by the executive members of MASA and the results are final.  Application is to be made in writing to the MASA Executive, and is to include:

1.  A cover letter outlining the conference and the applicant's level of participation
2.  An estimate of expenses
3.  A copy of the presentation abstract
4.  Written confirmation of registration or abstract acceptance
5.  A copy of your CV

Once the conference has concluded, students funded by MASA must be willing to present to the group a report on the conference and their role in it.
