My Backyard Babies
Spring 2005

This is the story in pictures of my recent back yard adventure. I had a great time video taping them every day.
But when they were ready to leave the nest I didn't realize that they would not know how to fly yet. The cats were chasing them, so Lonnie and I were able to capture 2 of them and bring them into the house. It was a lot of work, but we fed them lots of worms and apples. I had them in a pet carrier. So one day we sat the carrier in the backyard for them to get some fresh air and bird sounds. 8^) Well in a few mins their mom was standing at he cage with a worm in her mouth trying to get it to them. So Lonnie took them out of the cage and put them back in the nest. She lovingly fed them for a while.. Then she coaxed them out of the nest again. We watched as she coaxed them into some nearby ferns to hide. I could see she was watching them. So I relaxed. The next day, I was on the computer and my dog suddenly started barking at the window.. I looked and much to my suprise there on the window ledge was a baby robin!! And a cat was after it.. So Lonnie and I ran out in the front chased the cat away then chased the bird down the street. It flew a little but not enough to get away from a cat or us! We brought it in, got the pet carrier out and put it in.. After a while I decided to feed it.. It wouldn't take the worm only wanted to peck me! I told Lonnie this isn't one of the ones we fed, it is too thin and doesn't know how to eat from me. We decided it must be the one we thought had got caught by the cat earlier.. So we put it back in the nest and soon the mom took care of it and got it back in the ferns with the other two.

While it was a fun experience, I don't think I will be getting involved with baby birds again.. I am not a morning person and them little things wake up way too early for me.. And I prefer coffee when I do wake, not worms!!

Below I have a link to the slide show I made from some of the pictures I made of them.. Please click on the bird picture below to view them..
