In 1757 Mary Campbell
was captured by Delaware Indians at Penns Creek in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She was adopted by Chief
Netawatwees and lived for a while in Ohio
at the Falls of the Cuyahoga
River in Summit County, Ohio. She was reunited with her family
in 1764 as part of a peace treaty during the French and Indian war. The
captives were released near the present town of Coshocton, Ohio at Colonel Bouquet’s Camp. She
later married Joseph Willford in Mt. Pleasant Township, York County, PA in 1770. Eight years later She moved
with her husband and children to Western
Pennsylvania. They lived at Bald Ridge Farm, Dunkard Township in what is present day Greene County,PA.

Mary Campbell died in
1801
Most of her children
joined the migration west. Some settled in Wayne County, Ohio, a
county next
to Summit County
where Mary Campbell spent seven years as part of the family of Chief
Netawatwees.
Chief Netawatwees
welcomed the arrival of Moravian missionaries in 1772. The Moravians felt
a special mission to the Delaware and established towns in eastern Ohio.
Many Delaware Indians sided with the Americans during the Revolutionary
War because of this close connection with the Moravian missionaries.
Shortly after the Revolutionary War, some Delaware Indians moved to Canada
but many were pushed farther West and today live in Oklahoma.
Chief Netawatwees
died at Fort Pitt in 1776.
