There is superb hiking in the David Thompson area between Red Deer, Alberta and the Icefields Parkway in Banff and Jasper National Parks.  This area is mostly out of the Parks.  It therefore lets you see the devastating impact of clear-cutting in the past couple of decades under Conservative Alberta governments.  It also lets you see the environmental impact of the advent of four-wheelers.  The damage on this trail is becoming irrecoverable.  Still, this is a beautiful area with some nice hikes.
We are over halfway to the summit, which is the "hat" you see behind Patrice.  From where we are we hike around a large amphitheatre to the right and along a neat ridge to the "hat".  Behind the "hat" you can see Baldy Mountain another neat day hike.
Just a bit further along from  the above picture.  The amphitheatre is around the rock cliff behind Patrice.
The view from the top, The Hat, out over Nordegg townsite.  Nordegg was a going concern when coal was a major fuel.
Here's the old fella on top of Abraham.  You can see Baldy Mtn behind me.

A quite pleasant day hike with nice views of the front ranges on the west and foothills to the east.

And hiking with Patrice is always good for me.
