ALLEYN CHORALE
The Alleyn Chorale was founded in 1972 by Graham Stewart to sing the daily services at Hereford Cathedral for a week in August whilst the cathedral choir was on holiday. The Chorale has come together every succeeding second year to sing the daily services for a week at a cathedral or major church.
Membership of the Chorale is by invitation only, at the discretion of the Director of Music, with the aim of providing the visited cathedral with a balanced choir of very experienced singers able to perform at the highest standard in the context of cathedral worship, accompanied by an organist of exceptional ability.
A key element of the Chorale is the emphasis on living for the week as a community together in one place on a self-catering basis, and our expert chef is a key member of the team.
Following the untimely death of our founder, Graham Stewart in 1994, the present Director of Music,
Susan Farrow, was asked at very short notice to lead the Alleyn Chorale  on its visit to Bristol Cathedral. She continued to lead the Chorale on its subsequent trips and the Chorale was privileged to be led by such a distinguished and experienced professional musician. In July 2007 a final service of Choral Evensong was sung at Southwark Cathedral to mark the end of the Chorale in its traditional format.
The Alleyn Chorale will be continuing under the direction of Norman Harper, Assistant Director of Music at St. George's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Southwark. Plans are under way for a week of singing in Dublin in 2008
