Welcome Message Transcript

Hello - my name is Martha McNulty, and I am a graduate student in the Master of Science Program in Professional and Technical Communication at New Jersey Institute of Technology. I created this portfolio to display samples of my professional and academic work to my professors, fellow students, colleagues and potential employers. The portfolio is organized into different topic areas, which are listed on each page. These topics represent the core competencies expected of graduates of the MSPTC program. This pod cast is one work example in my oral presentation topic area. I invite you to explore other work examples in my portfolio, including recorded messages throughout.

But first, I would like to tell you a little about my professional background and education. I am currently an employee of Union County College in Elizabeth, New Jersey as Coordinator of Professional Development for the Center for Student Success. The Center for Student Success is a Federal, Title-V, grant funded program for Hispanic Serving Institutions. I coordinate grant funded professional development opportunities for faculty and staff that focus on increasing the retention and persistence of our first year students at the College. The grant is multifaceted, and one of its activities is establishing learning communities of subject matter courses paired with the College’s first year seminar course. As an adjunct professor, I teach the developmental math computation half of one of the grant funded learning communities. Our students are amazing individuals, and it is a privilege to be part of an initiative that will help them to succeed in their education.

I completed my own undergraduate studies at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York where I majored in Mechanical Engineering. While I was working as an engineer, the opportunity to make a significant career change presented itself to me. A local vocational school was looking for an experienced engineer to establish, coordinate and teach in a new design and drafting program at one of their locations. I had always been interested in education, and wondered if I might enjoy teaching, so I decided to accept the challenge. I immediately fell in love with all aspects of the job. Teaching, creating curriculum and managing an educational program that I felt was truly helping students realize their professional dreams. I have been employed in higher education since, providing academic support, teaching and managing programming at the Community College level.

I selected NJIT’s graduate program in Professional and Technical Communication to balance my highly technical undergraduate degree with a graduate degree in the humanities. My studies in engineering had provided me with analytical, organizational and problem solving skills, but were lacking in the practical art of writing and communication. As a teacher of the technical trades and math, I felt that I already had a natural ability to express technical concepts, and I wanted to develop that skill further through my graduate studies. The flexibility of the MSPTC program has allowed me to tailor my course work directly to my chosen career in education. The program has allowed me to grow in my verbal and written communication skills, as well as my technological skills and to apply them in every aspect of my work. After completing my degree, I hope to continue working in education, within training and program management.

Thank you for visiting my site, and for listening to this message. Please stay for a while and browse through my work. My student information is accessible through the link at the top of each page, beneath the header. It provides an overview of my coursework and program information as well as my résumé.

Thank you again for your time and attention, and goodbye.
