Involvement With the NAACP
The NAACP was played major role in Marshall's life. In 1939 he was appointed director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. His first involvement with the NAACP was when he was a lawyer for the organization, and was considered a position of honor. For example, one of the cases he fought for the NAACP was some of the local stores would sell items to Black people, but would not hire them so some high school graduates protested against this and the store was trying to sue them.

One of the first cases with this particular organization was to equalize the income of Black teachers and white teachers. The white teachers were getting about twice of the amount of money as blacks, and Marshall was hired to fight against the school board.
