Hi, I'm Mare Hanson from
Northern California.
The page was last updated on:
And has been visited by this
many people: I'm a single mom to my household of dogs, hamsters, and turtles; I work as an office manager and enjoy helping others to organize their offices. I like to read all kinds of books, am an avid "journal writer", and work with expressive art.
I was diagnosed with Stage Three breast cancer in
early 2003, had a modified radical mastectomy of the right breast (and 19
lymph nodes), had a single lumen port installed in my left shoulder, and
am currently undergoing chemotherapy.
As the chemo progressed more of my hair fell out, and other body hair went with it. I look very "Yul Brynner" these days. Hah! When my chemotherapy first started, I tried working full time, but found that I was too ill right after the treatments to be of much use to the office where I worked, so I went to part time. As the effects of the chemo treatments accumulated, and I (and my immune system) weakened, my hours at work were cut to nothing and I stayed at home, working on relaxation and meditation techniques to help minimize my symptoms, and expressive artwork to help with the emotional, psychological and spiritual side of my battle with cancer. I found that the horde of pets I had helped me to stay focused on life, and to get out of bed every morning even on days when I was feeling horrible. One of my dreams is to some day establish a "doggie daycare" unit where working folks can safely and economically leave their dogs for the day. A longer term goal is to establish a sort of "old folks home" for aging dogs. I would also like to establish a non-profit charitable organization (named after my mother) for cancer patients and their family members to provide them with free art supplies and art therapy courses to aid in their recovery. To learn a little bit more about me, my pets, and my cancer-related art, feel free to browse through the pages on this site.
