The Castle.
Stirling Castle is home to The Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders. Dating from the twelfth century it played a huge part in the struggle against English domination. It has been besieged at least 16 times in its history, and much of Scotland's history has been played out within or around it.
In 1174 control of the castle was handed over to the English as part of the terms of the release of William I held captive by them.
It was handed back by Richard I in 1189. By 1291 it was once again in the hands of the English king Edward I while he adjudicated the future of the Scottish crown. On 11th September 1297 William Wallace and Andrew Murray led the Scots to victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge which stands below the castle.
Wallace had 40,000 men hidden on a hill known as Abbey Craig.
The 60,000 strong English army led by John De Warrene decided to cross the Forth river at the bridge which was only wide enough for two horsemen abreast at a time rather than ride upstream where hundreds could cross together.
This was to be their downfall.
When a manageable number of infantrymen had crossed the bridge, Wallace gave the signal and the ambush was sprung. The cavalry which had already crossed found boggy ground ahead of them and the ones who tried

to retreat back over the bridge found themselves locked in by those still advancing. Wallaces men armed only with simple weapons were victorious and Warrene and any surviving men retreated to Berwick.
In 1543 the infant Mary Queen of Scots was crowned in the Chapel Royal within the castle.
1746 saw the Jacobite army under Bonnie Prince Charlie take the town of Stirling and set up its artillary on Gowan Hill to besiege the castle.
The castle's artillary held and destroyed the attackers and the Jacobites retreated.
