John moved from Knox County to Laurel County, KY, at an early age.
He attended Laurel Seminary in the 1880's and taught school for
a few years. He left teaching to become a traveling salesman,
a "drummer" of the horseback era, and he traveled over all Eastern Kentucky.
He was well known for his gray mare that he rode for many years.
