Our ancestors often used the following naming procedure when picking

out a name for a new child. This explains why certain names are VERY

common in a given family line. Watching for these patterns can help in

your genealogy research. Of course, this is not written in stone and just

about the time we figure it out it will change again!

 1st son = father's father

 2nd son = mother's father

 3rd son = father

 4th son = father's oldest brother

 5th son = father's 2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother

 1st dau = mother's mother

 2nd dau = father's mother

 3rd dau = mother

 4th dau = mother's oldest sister

 5th dau = mother's 2nd oldest sister or father's oldest sister

North Carolina Land Grants in South Carolina by Brent Holcomb c. 1980

The border between North and South Carolina was a point of controversy for many years. Finally in 1764 the border east of the Catawba River was Survey and by 1772 surveyed west of that river. Before these surveys over 1000 grants were issued by North Carolina in territory which is now South Carolina. These grants are in the present counties of: MARLBORO * CHESTERFIELD * LANCASTER * YORK * CHESTER * UNION * CHEROKEE * SPARTANBURG * GREENVILLE * LAURENS * NEWBERRY. However in the years immediately following the survey these areas were considered CRAVEN OR BERKELEY COUNTIES (and ST MARK'S or ST DAVIDS'S PARISH). The North Carolina counties from which these land grants were issued were BLADEN * ANSON * MECKLENBURG and TRYON. The book includes plat maps from both Bullock's and Allison's Creeks as well as Bullocks Creek Area.

Useful sites!

Some of the web sites may no longer be current. If you find any please let us know and we can delete it. We do not know who put this list together but "Thank you for doing it".
HINT: You can copy the URL (addresses). Use your mouse button on the address you want then push your right mouse button, select copy. Now, go the the top of your web browser and use your mouse button to click on the URL (address) space, it will change color, press your space bar one time and the information in the URL will be gone! Now, use your mouse and click on the empty line, now use your right mouse button and select paste! Click on the end of the line and press return on your keyboard. This takes you to the new address and saves some typing time. (plus for me the dreaded "transposed" letters!
