The galapagos penguin weighs about 4.9 pounds and is about 20.8 inches tall. They live on the
Galapagos archipelago. They eat crustaceans and fish. The galapagos penguins are the smallest
of the spheniscids.
Galapagos penguins have a narrow white band from the eye extending under the chin and a
black band that runs in an inverted horseshoe shape around their fronts. They breed on the
Galapagos Islands and on the north coast of Isabela Island, which is just north of the equator.
Nests are underdeveloped burrows. Two eggs are usually laid. Incubation takes 38 to 40 days.
The chicks are raised and guarded for 30 days after hatching. Chicks go out on their own when
they are 60 to 65 days old. Their predators are: Galapagos hawks, Galapagos rats, sharks, and
seals.
