The magellanic penguin weighs about 7.7 pounds and is about 27 inches tall. They live on the
cold temperate subantarctic islands. They eat crustaceans and fish.
Magellanic penguins have a broad black band under their chin and another black band that
runs in an inverted horseshoe shape around their fronts. The chest is dotted with a few black
spots in a random pattern. The magellanic penguin breeds from late September to February on
the east and southern coasts of South America. Nests are built under bushes or in burrows. Two
eggs are laid. Incubation takes 39 to 42 days. The chicks are raised and guarded for 29 days after
hatching. The chicks finally leave the nest when they are about 60 to 70 days old. There
predators are: sea lions, Dominican gulls, and giant petrels.
