The Association of Malaysian Students did it again! This ambitious bunch of youths organised yet another food drive, this time bigger and better than before- FEASTIVAL!

On Friday 15th August at approximately 11am, wonderful whiffs of Malaysian cuisine could be smelt miles along the Guild Precinct. Almost like a sausage sizzle but even better, the delicious Malaysian lunch deal was sold for $4 for AMS members and $5 for non members.

Included in the lunch box was fried rice, pappadum & curry, hot dog, satay sticks, Greek salad and chicken wing. There was a long queue as the chicken wings took quite some time to cook, but most of them waited anyway as the deal was too good to be missed.

Some say good things don't come cheap while cheap things are no good, but AMS' FEASTIVAL managed to challenge the popular cliché.

That's right, guys. FEASTIVAL, an amazing 'food fest', brought to you by the AMS: always serving the hungry stomaches of the Curtin community.

The much anticipated “Merah” annual night club event organised by the Association of Malaysian Students (AMS) took place on 8th May 2003 at The Church night club.

The doors opened at 9pm, and soon later there was a queue of people crowding outside to come in.

Why?

Because as with all AMS events, it was packed with fun, more fun & a twist! There were door prizes to be won, lucky draws, best dressed guy/gal, 4 SLAVES at the Slave Auction, exotic dancers that did a little “bondage” on unsuspecting clubbers, and throughout the night DJ Rikki and DJ Kenny L (the Saturday night DJs at “The Church”) played awesome house music!

Mamak Nite (Grok)
April 2003
By Tey Kher Ying, Media Officer of AMS

“I see people....but I don’t see the food….”

The Association of Malaysian Students’ (AMS) Mamak Nite kicked off with a rocky start at approximately 6pm on 28th April. The food came a little later than expected and it was a blistering cold Friday! However, the AMS committees were determined not to let the trivial details dampen everyone’s roaring spirits.

Half and hour later, the problems proved to be a blessing in disguise. While waiting for the food, members and committees mingled around as if they have known each other for ages! Laughter was heard, and new friendships were formed; creating a warm and pleasant atmosphere at the Vege Patch Cafe’s grounds. It didn’t feel like a 120 unfamiliar people; it was more like a small community of friends, chatting away and laughing over corny jokes.

When a delightful aroma was picked up, everyone rushed to the buffet table eagerly. For Malaysian members, it was like Malaysia all over again with dishes such as crispy curry puffs, fried noodles, spring rolls, ‘nasi lemak’ (rice and chicken), mixed vegetables and a lot more. And for our international friends, sampling Malaysian cuisine was indeed a treat to their taste buds. According to Jerry, our Vice-President, the food was just ‘smashing’!!!!

The rest of the night was a smooth sailing one. Despite an occasional glitch over the lighting system, it was pure fun all the way. A filled stomach and new friends, what more can anyone ask for?

The Mamak Nite was definitely a NITE to be remembered!!!

About Us (Interlink)
April 03

The Association of Malaysian Students (AMS) at Curtin University has come a long way since their genesis in 1988. Since then, the association which started off with six members evolved into a one which currently accommodates over 400 members!

Members of AMS can expect lots of wicked fun and warm friendship for the rest of the year. The committee for 2003 have specially arranged many exciting activities to spice up international student’s life, such as a Malaysian-style buffet, a night club event and many more. And the excitement doesn’t stop there. There’ll be lots to do and join for the rest of the year.

Of course, there are also other benefits to cater for those who aren’t so keen in shaking their booties. Those who are members automatically receive an AMS membership card which enables you to get discounts from over 50 places in Perth. Ranging from hair salons to restaurants, you save more by using the AMS card! We also represent members and assist them in issues that international students normally face.

General Information

Have you registered with the Malaysian Consulate?

CONSULATE-GENERAL OF MALAYSIA PERTH
Hyatt Regency Hotel Perth
Room 204/206
99 Adelaide Terrace (Connects with St. George's Terrace)
Perth, WA 6000
Tel: 08-92251234

ANY Malaysian student is advised to register with the Malaysian Consulate. It is mainly to keep track of Malaysian students in Perth. So, when you have the time, hop over to the Hyatt Hotel and just mention that you're a Malaysian student and wish to register. You can also register through the Malaysian Students Department in Australia website, but since we're in Perth, it's a good idea to do it on hand over here.

Want to convert your Malaysian Driver's License to an Australian Driver's License?

Here's how it goes:
1. Although the road rules are practically the same, there are, however, some things that you DO need to know. For example, if someone to ask you "Are you allowed to overtake a vehicle on the left?" Most of us would say "NO". Actually, here in Perth, you CAN! You can download the sample test from the link below (Licensing Services>Driving Skills>Practice Learner's Test>Download), in which the system is similar to the TOEFL computer based test that some of you might have taken. You can run the sample test as many times as you want, and most questions are repeated. So you might want to take some notes down, as the sample test is very similar to the actual test.

2. Once you feel you're confident enough (the passing mark is 24/30), bring along your current M'sian License, passport, proof of address, and proof of signature (If you're under 18, you'll need a letter of consent from your parents or legal guardian) to the Licensing centre (East Perth - 14 Wickham Street). There ARE others of course, but so far, the one at Wickham Street does not require your license to be translated.

3. You do not need to phone in to make a reservation of any sort, just walk in, take a number, and wait for your turn to take the test (tests are only conducted until 3pm, so go before that time). Once you've completed it (assuming you've passed), they'll take a photo of you and will provide you with a temporary slip as your Australian License. The actual one will be mailed within a week. You will be required to pay a conversion fee ($40) plus either $40 (for 1 year) or $102 (for 5 years). (NO EFTPOS OR CREDIT CARD).

4. That's it! For further information, visit http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au.
