Anne had become pregnant in 1826, and Ben took her to East Sussex, where he was beginning to buildup a country estate near Robertsbridge. Anne went under the pseudonym Mrs Leigh [the name of Ben's relations on the Isle of Wight]. In 1828 they went to America, and stayed for nearly two years. By 1833 Anne had become ill and Ben took her to Pelham Place in Hastings, for the fresh sea air. Later that year he took her to Ryde on the Isle of Wight, she died on 30 August 1834. The record of her burial, in the name of Anne Smith states only that she died at Ryde, no home address. She was buried at St Edmund's Church Wooton."     BENJAMIN LEIGH SMITH "radical" thinker, connected with J.S. Mills. b  12 Mar 1828 Glottingham, Sussex  -1913  A barrister, In 1901 Census, at Hotel Belgarvia, London  Res also at 64 Gower St, Middx; Attended Cambridge, (Jesus College) 1848, Michs. 1848; 31st Wrangler, 1852; B.A. 1857; M.A. 1861. Hon. Fellow, 1882-1913. The first Dissenter admitted to the degree of B.A. Adm. at the Inner Temple, Nov. 8, 1852. Called to the Bar, Jan. 26, 1856, but did not practise. Made five voyages to the Arctic regions; the most important were the last two in the Eira, which he had built at Peterhead. Discovered the S.W. coast of Franz-Josef Land and a navigable route to that territory, 1880. In 1881 the ship was crushed by ice and her company built a hut (which many years later Nansen found standing). With sails made of tablecloths, and after a journey of many weeks, they fell in with a Dutch exploration ship. He would not read his papers at the R.G.S. meetings, and in consequence of his retiring disposition, his voyages are less well-known than they deserve. Some account of them is given in Arctic Exploration by Douglas Hoare. The R.G.S. states ?the voyage of the Eira must be pronounced to have been the most important summer cruise that has ever been taken in the Arctic regions. Mr Leigh Smith's discoveries will form a fresh starting-point for future Polar discovery.? A cape in Spitzbergen is named after him. Married, 1887, Miss Charlotte Sellers, and had issue two sons. Died Jan. 4, 1913. For an eloquent tribute to him see Polar Exploration, by W. S. Brice. Father of Lionel L. (1891). (Alan Moore; Law Lists; Inns of Court; Foster, Men at the Bar; The Times, Jan. 6, 1913; F. Brittain.)

It appears that Octavius had- and allowed a steamer he owned to remain unsafe, and it exploded. No one was killed.  Visited at his home on occasion by thinker Hebert Spencer. Had something like a feud with Patrick Sellar. (Both men reported to be stubborn and cantankerous). Feud ended, sealed with marriage of his dau Gertrude's marriage to Alexander Craig Sellar. (Ref Times 25 Nov 1929). Some portray Patrick Sellar was an inhumane villain, but I wasn't there, so I can't confirm or deny. 1851 Octavius at St Giles in the Fields with children: William, Rosiland, Flora, Gerald;  niece Frances A.   ALBERT VENN DICEY b 4 Feb 1835 Little Claybrook, Leicester, d 7 April 1922, Barrister In Practice, In 1881 Census, living at 107 Victoria St London, Middlesex, with wife- no children there. Professor of English Law and a fellow of All Souls at Oxford. Albert Venn Dicey argued brilliantly for the impartiality of the courts and the Rule of Law. He held that the law is there for all to obey and that no one, not even those in the highest reaches of government, is exempt from obeying the law.
