LAYE SURNAME: The earliest Laye name would certainly go back to Norman times DE LAYE. There seem to have been more than a few Laye's in the fourth and fifthteenth centuries. LAYE V LAY

The "LAY" families here, may or may not be related. Our branch of the Laye family has traditionally spelled its name as "Laye," except for a few lapses, as in Henry Airey Laye having his last name spelled "LAY" on his Anglican baptism certificate. The branches other than Francis Laye's and Anne Walsh, spelled their name "Lay." The Laye family kept the Laye form after leaving the Isle. Also, the Lays there seem to be a merchant class, and later professionals, but rooted a permanent fixtures there. Our Layes were there as if passing through. Previously they were in Ireland and Francis was a captain on duty there. They Layes left the isle for Berwick about 1850. I see no "Layes" other than Anne Walsh, buried there.
