DWYER FAMILY HISTORY

DWYERS FROM CLARE/ DUBLIN/ TIPPERARY    This family was once part of the DWYER LAYE website- but until there is definitive proof that this branch is connected our Dwyers,  it should be seperate not to mislead. My proof was circumstantial, based on the times being in sync, locale in Ireland, relocation of George Dwyer family to Bengal India, as our Robert Hoare Dwyer. Lastly, there is a similiar social status, with the almost exclusive occupation in the military. How many Irishmen named Dwyer are made generals and trusted with cannons by the English? So while there is most likely a connection somewhere thhe two families I feel need to be seperated.      LINK TO DWYERS OF BALYQUIRK

Agnes Eleanor DWYER b 7 Dec. 1828 or 1829, d.08 JUN 1890 Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India;  Name in LDS  Per Mark Thomas, "There was a photograph of Agnes Eleanor THOMAS, (nee DWYER) taken by her brother-in-law Henry Watts TOOGOOD. In 1963 my grandmother had enlargements made of this by a company called Davy & Co. of Harrogate, Yorkshire. These will need to be searched for! My grandmother describes meeting a Mr. Clark of Allahabad at a tennis party in Naini Tal who said Agnes Eleanor was even in old age, an elegant and handsome woman. There was also a gold star-shaped pendant and chain which belonged to Agnes Eleanor is listed as being in my mother's possession. There was a christening cup too, which was owned in 1976 by my uncle, David E. O'D. Thomas. It had been donated by Robert John Blennerhasset DWYER and has the names of Edward O'D. THOMAS (my grandfather), my uncle and my cousin Christian THOMAS engraved on it...Agnes Eleanor finally extracted from the Pope family - she was paid Rs. 1120 in August 1887. She seems to have been a careful woman of strong Christian beliefs and wrote prayers, poems and text references into the back pages of her mother's 1818 Bible. My grandmother feels that AE's mother Mary DWYER had died 'some nine years' before AED married Henry Charles THOMAS. My grandmother puts Henry Charles KING's birth date as 1850 and says that he worked in the Government of India Secretariat Department of the United Provinces. She says that he was a good, supportive son to his mother for the rest of her life. My grandmother writes that Agnes Eleanor probably lived on a small pension and help from her sister Isabella Frances TOOGOOD and Capt. Henry Watts TOOGOOD. Her four children received a free education at Calcutta's La Martiniere College."

Annie Amy Jane Jane SHEELS, b 3 OCT 1845 Bengal India (Had siblings, Catherine and James. Dwyer aged 21 years 4 months and 8 days. Born 3rd October, 1845 at Fattyghur. Died 11th February 1866 at Nynee Tall - after a lingering illness from diarrhoea for nearly four months before and after her confinement, leaving her husband and three boys to lament her sad loss.  My own darling Annie departed this life calmly and peacefully on the night of the above-mentioned date at 10 minutes past 10 o'c. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be His Holy Name - and may He enable me to bear her loss with resignation."  Naturally the loss of Annie was a savage blow for Robert. He wrote in the Bible a poem about her:
"One Lamb the Shepherd gave me A fair and lovely wife
He gave her in my keeping To cherish through my life
She lay upon my bosom, She was my hope and pride
Perhaps she was my Idol, my own, my lovely bride."

Mentioned in the HISTORY OF THE 1ST & 2ND BATTALIONS THE LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT IN THE GREAT WAR by Wylly, H.C.
"Mentioned as being with the 1st Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment in September 1912 when the battalion moved from Aldershot (England) to Fermoy (S. Ireland). At that time the Battalion was transferred from the 6th Infantry Brigade to the 16th Infantry Brigade, of the 6th Division. In October 1913 the British Infantry Regiment's underwent a re-organisation, and the number of
companies per battalion was reduced from 8 to 4. At that time Major Dwyer was Officer Commanding "C" Company, 1st Battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment. Dwyer was not mentioned later in the book when the Battalion left to fight in France and Flanders, I can only presume that he was probably promoted and posted to another Regiment in 1914?" Emily Marie LAYE  b 11 September 1848, Douglas, IOM. bap   Lambert Dwyer and Emily Laye  had "Illegitimate child" married to his brother, William Dwyer. Appears to have been a long term affair- each chasing each other back and forth across Atlantic. Other children may be Lambert's - Only evidence for Hugh.  Her husband divorced her- changed his name in the 1880 census from William to Thomas. Hugh lists his father as "Lambert Dwyer" on his marriage certificate. Lambert visited America, and Emily staying with her sister in Scotland, not far from where Lambert was stationed- Hugh born there, in Edinburgh. Hugh used to receive money from a "Bertie Dwyer" at Christmas- a good amount.
Emily Remarried: to John PRINCE,  (b about 1858,  d at age of 32 at 314 Porter Street, Detroit 7 Dec 1890. Accidental overdose of chloroform administered during surgery) He was the grandson of Hon. Col John PRINCE, alleged illegitimate son of William IV of ENGLAND and an actress. (Most prob untrue - but he must have been an impressive person to have people think he could be). Emily is  my direct gg grandmother. She died 23 Aug 1896 in Detroit MI as "Mrs Emily Prince."
Hon. Colonel John PRINCE (hated by the citizens of Detroit, who placed a price on his head), -Famous or infamous for his ruthlessness at the Battle of Windsor

Gertrude Sarah LAPORTE (KEENAN) 1895 Hugh DWYER'S Marriage Certificate To Gertrude LAPORTE (aka KEENAN)  Note his mother listed as 'SAGE"  A common error with copyists here and in UK- The slightest sloppiness will make the name "LAYE" appear as ''SAGE" OR 'LAGE'. Note "Lambert" oddly recorded here instead of 'William". Also Hugh here affirms to Scottish birth, contradicting his "US birth." WHY DOES HUGH LIST HIS UNCLE AS HIS FATHER?
