BABCOCK, Alfred, 1805-1871
BABCOCK, Alfred, a Representative from New York; born in Hamilton, Madison County, NY, April 15, 1805; attended the local schools and Gaines (NY) Academy.  He studied medicine, moving to Gaines, Orleans County, NY, where he practiced his profession.  He was elected a member of the board of trustees of the village of Gaines at its first election on May 28, 1839.  He was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843) after which he resumed the practice of medicine in Gaines, NY.  He moved to Illinois in 1850 to Galesburg, Knox County, where he practiced his profession until his death on May 16, 1871.  He is buried in Hope Cemetery.
BABCOCK, Leander, 1811-1864
BABCOCK, Leander, a Representative from NewYork; born in Paris, Oneida County, NY, March 1, 1811.  He graduated from Union College, Schenectady, NY, in 1830.  He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1834.  He moved to Oswego, NY where he practiced law and was district attorney for Oswego County 1841-1843.  He was elected mayor of Oswego in 1850 and 1851.  He was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853.  He was president of the board of education in 1853 and 1855. He died in Richfield Springs, NY, August 18, 1864; interment in Riverside Cemetery, Oswego, NY.
BABCOCK, Joseph Weeks, 1850-1909
BABCOCK, Joseph Weeks, (grandson of Joseph Weeks), a Representative from Wisconsin; born in Swanton, Franklin County, VT., March 6, 1850; moved to Linn County, Iowa, with his parents, who settled near Mount Vernon in 1855.  He attend the common schools of Mount Vernon and Cedar Falls.  He moved to Necedah, Juneau County, WI, in 1872 and engaged in the lumber business.  He was a member of the Wisconsin State assembly 1889-1893; chairman of the Republican National Congressional Committee in 1894 and 1902.  He was a delegate at large to the Republican National Convention at Chicago in 1904 and was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and to the six succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1893-March 3, 1907).  He was chairman of the Committee on District of Columbia (Fifty-fourth through Fifty-ninth Congresses).  He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1906 and retired to live in Washington, DC until his death there on April 27, 1909.  He was cremated and his ashes were deposited in the monument on the family plot in Rock Creek Cemetery.
BABCOCK, William, 1785-1838
BABCOCK, William, a Representative from New York; born in Hinsdale, Westmoreland County, NH, in 1785; moved to Penn Yan, NY in 1813 and engaged in mercantile pursuits.  Upon the formation of Yates County was appointed by the Governor as the first county treasurer.  He was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-second Congress (March 4, 1831-March 3, 1833).  He resumed mercantile pursuits and was also a hotel keeper.  He died in Penn Yan, Yates County, NY, October 20, 1838.  He is interred in City Hill Cemetery in Torrey Township, near Penn Yan.
