Midget Girls' Canadian Fast Pitch Championships
July 29 - August 5, 2001
Lashburn, Saskatchewan, Canada
Calgary 76'ers
The Calgary 76'ers, Young Women's Midget 'A' Fastball Club, first adopted the "76'ers" name last year, in our first year of Midget 'A' fastball, because of the rich tradition that the name "76'ers" has had in Calgary in the past.  Notable fastball players such as Haley Wickenheiser, who is a member of the Canadian National and Olympic Women's Softball and Hockey teams, were part of the "76'ers" history in Calgary.

Today, the Calgary Midget 'A' 76'ers are affiliated with the Calgary Minor Softball Association's Girls All-Star Softball Program.  (GASP), and play in the Calgary Women's Fastpitch Association Division 1 against Senior 'A', Junior 'A' and 'B' and other Midget 'A' teams.  League play for this year just ended with the Calgary Midget 76'ers capturing the League pennant for the regular season by placing first in the nine team CWFA Division 1.

In tournament play this season, the Calgary Midget 76'ers had mixed results.  The team competed in tournaments in White Rock, BC, Red Deer, AB, Saskatoon, SK, Great Falls, MT and Calgary, AB.  In these seven tournaments the team captured one gold and two silver medals.  At the Alberta Provincial Championships, the 76'ers put in a strong performance, losing only to the eventual gold and silver medal-winning teams and capturing the bronze medal to qualify for the Midget National Championships.

The Calgary Midget 76'ers team for the National Championships is comprised of fifteen players ranging in age from 17 to 19 years.  We have four 1st year aged players, four 2nd year aged players and seven third year aged players on the roster.  One of our players is playing for Team Alberta in the 2001 Canada Summer Games, one of our players played for Team Alberta in the 1999 Canada Summer Games, while another was an alternate, and three of our players will be playing softball at university or college in the United States this coming school year.  The four coaches on the Calgary 76'ers coaching staff have more than 50 years of fastball coaching and playing experience among them.

For the majority of the Calgary Midget 76'ers players and coaches, this will be our first Canadian National Championships.  We are looking forward to a week of highly competitive and skillfully played softball among the 16 "best" Midget teams in Canada.  We are also looking forward to experiencing the wonderful hospitality and softball knowledge and enthusiasm  which the residents of Lashburn are famous for.  We are truly honoured and very excited to represent the Province of Alberta, the City of Calgary and our generous sponsors and loyal supporters at these 2001 Canadian National Midget 'A' Girls Softball Championships.  YAHOO, eh!!
