Live at the Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, CA, 23 August, 1968
Mastered from soundboard tapes.
Notes: A wonderful performance from the Bookends period, full of energy
and good humor. The performance was recorded by Al Kooper, and was
likely intended for an official live album. A few recording anomalies
(the guitar hitting Paul's mic stand and tape saturation) likely
commanded a veto from the CBS Records executives. It's a
shame, because, aside from a few recording baubles, the show is
certainly worth an official release. Of special note are the
performances of "Overs," "At The Zoo," "Leaves That Are Green," "The
Dangling Conversation," and "Old Friends / Bookends."

Notes: An excellent performance from one of the few concerts where Simon and Garfunkel had a full backing band. The whole show was filmed for a TV special, Songs of America, to air later that November. Due to the political overtones of the show (not the least of which was the song "Cuba Si - Nixon No"), AT&T withdrew much of its sponsorship, and only two tracks from the show were aired, including "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The performance is fairly lively, given the likelihood that Paul and Art weren't on the best of terms, due to Art's increasing interest in screen acting. Many of the songs from Bridge Over Troubled Water performed at this show were new to the audience - all but "The Boxer" were unreleased at this point. This is definitely a show worthy of official release.

I love this one, and it's very hard to find. Incredibly rare stuff from the studio and live.
It's great to hear all the 6 different studio versions of Overs (then known as "Time Song").
How anyone got hold of such rare studio outtakes, I'll never know, but I'm glad they did.
This set qualifies as 'indispensible' for the S&G fan.
