Tudor England was a great period of change. As we had left the Middle Ages superstition  began to give way to science. Inventions, new discoveries and the printing press meant that Kings and the aristocracy could not keep control as they had. This is the beginning of a New Age. click here for more.

The industrial revolution began in the late 1700s and we saw massive changes in the countries population. This meant there were growing demands on farmers to increase food production. This resulted in enclosure. Enclosure Acts certainly helped make farming more efficient, but they also meant many poor farmers could not afford to stay on the land and they had to move to the newly developing cities to work in the factories.Agricultural developments Click here to find out more about changes in farming.

We are looking at transportation in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Roads. The Turnpike Trusts and the development of roads to speed up communication and trade.

Canals. Canal Mania, The canals developed as a effective way of moving bulky goods cheaply. There were expensive and slow, when the railways began the canals were doomed.

Railways. Watts development of rotary motion in the steam engine opened up lots of opportunities. After a slow start and much suspicion the railways took off and their social impact was massive.

Education was an issue during the early years of the industrial revolution. The problem was workers had to be literate, but if they were too educated they would become disruptive and challenge the bosses. Click here for more about education.

Those children that did not go to school had to find work. Life was hard and many did not make it to adulthood. If you would like to see some images of some of the jobs children would have in town then click here

As the population grew, so the need to look at the problems of health care were becoming urgent. Hospital meant a significant chance of death and surgeons were little more than butchers. Click here to see more about the developments in medicine.
