List of Behaviorists/Trainers

These are not endorsements. The list was put together by the people on the shy-k9s list, who have found trainers/behaviorists that have helped in their situations, or people that are members of this list willing to work with shy/fearful dogs. Every situation is different, and these are some suggestions to look for:

1) Asks the dog owner detailed questions about the dog's behavior and personality to understand what the problem is

2) Just interacts with the dog to see how it deals with other people (and with other dogs if that's also a problem).

3) Talks with dog owner *at length* about dog body language and behaviors to help you understand what your dog is telling you.

4) A behaviorist should be able to implement theory into practice. In other words, they should have some practical experience in training.

5) If a behaviorist knows the breed and can relate to breed traits a bonus, but bottom line, go by gut feeling. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
